Adams Bowersville Allison Ussery Adams, 91, of 695 Airline Store Road died Monday, June 22, 1998. A native of Hart County, Mrs. Adams was a daughter of the late Samuel E. and Schaffer Doyle Ussery. She was preceded in death by a son, Dr. James Kenneth Adams. She was a homemaker and a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and a member of W.M.U. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cross Roads Baptist Church with the Revs. Ben Coleman and David Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Adams Stockton, Murphy, N.C.; a son, Morgan Douglas Adams, Clermont; two sisters, Doris Brown, Hartwell, and Enoree Phillips, Greenville, S.C.; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Roman Allen, 81, of 1355 Newton Bridge Road died Monday, June 22, 1998. A native of Clarke County, Mr. Allen was a son of the late Love Henry and Estelle Bone Allen. He was retired from Chicopee Manufacturing after 25 years of service. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Bridges Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard Conine officiating. Burial will be in Oconee Hill Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Cora Owensby Allen; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Bobby Wilson, Hull, and Mary and Doug Parr, Athens; five sons, Thomas Allen, Hull, William Allen, Nicholson, and James Allen, Jerry Michael Allen and David Allen, all of Athens; 16 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Frances B. Brown Miami Frances Booth Brown, 77, died Sunday, June 14, 1998. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Brown was a daughter of Hoyt G. Booth. She was a retired insurance agent for Independent Life and Accident in the Athens and Atlanta areas and a retired supervisor for Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Miami. Funeral services were June 17 in Coral Gables, Fla. Survivors, in addition to her father, include two daughters, Sandra Izquierdo and Peggy Smith, both of Miami; two sisters, Lorene Fortson, Hull, and Agnes Whitsel, Macon; 14 grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Announcement courtesy of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville. J. Phil Campbell Jr. Athens J. Phil Campbell, 81, of 164 S. Homewood Drive died Monday, June 22, 1998. Mr. Campbell was born April 9, 1917, the son of the late James Philander and Lorraine Proctor Campbell. Mr. Campbell Sr. was the originator of the Georgia Extension Service and served as its director for 25 years. Mr. Campbell was a 1934 graduate of Athens High School and a 1940 graduate of the University of Georgia with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. He also studied at the University of Virginia and George Washington University and spent one year in research in Denmark as a rotary scholar. Prior to his public career, he was an active farmer with his own dairy operation which he began at age 18 and built while attending UGA full time. While at UGA he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and Phi Kappa Phi honor society. He served in the Army Air Corps 1942-45, serving from cadet to first lieutenant. Mr. Campbell served as president of the University of Georgia Alumni Society from 1956-57. He received the UGA Alumni Merit Award in 1976 and was an emeritus trustee of the UGA Foundation. Mr. Campbell served six years in the Georgia House of Representatives and 14 years as state commissioner of agriculture. He was U.S. undersecretary of agriculture from 1969-1975 under Presidents Nixon and Ford. He was a member of the Athens Rotary Club and was the recipient of the rotary fellowship to Denmark award in 1938-39. He also was a member of Atlanta Commerce Club, Athens Country Club, Capitol Hill Club, Washington, D.C., American Legion, Elks and Georgia Farm Bureau. He was a past member of Watkinsville Civitan Club and past president of Piedmont Agricultural Development Corporation. He had served on the board of directors of the Agricultural Economics Association of Georgia, was past chairman of the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, Institutional Farms Advisory Committee and Georgia Tobacco Advisory Board and past vice chairman of Georgia Farmers Market Authority. He was a former member of the state Board for Children and Youth and Georgia State Soil Conservation Advisory Board. After leaving the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1975, Mr. Campbell was a consultant with GoldKist and later to individual clients. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth "Nan" McCrerry Campbell of Athens, originally from Savannah and a 1942 UGA graduate; two sons, James P. Campbell, Watkinsville, Ga., and John Alan Campbell, Athens, Ga.; four daughters, Anne C. Prichard, Tennille, Ga., Vivian L. Campbell, Chevy Chase, Md., Jennifer C. Foy, Richmond, Va., and Janice F. Campbell, Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister, Montez Campbell Adams, Louisville, Ky.; 10 grandchildren and 12 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at First Baptist Church of Athens with Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. Canarina Hartwell Retired Army Major Arnold Ramano Canarina, 61, of 1823 Ridge Road died Monday, June 15, 1998. A native of Tuckahoe, N.Y., Mr. Canarina was a son of the late John Baptist and Mary Greuber Canarina. He was a retired Army major and served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He was a member of the Northeast Georgia Retired Officers Association. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Strickland Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Demonbreun officiating. Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Chattanooga National Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tenn., with full military honors.
