A native of Clarke County, Mr. Arnold was a son of the late Annie and George Arnold. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Hurley Funeral Home with the Rev. Gregory Coleman officiating. Survivors include his wife, Gloria C. Arnold; three daughters, Tonya Cunningham, Lisa Cunningham and Gloria Simmons, all of Athens; a sister, Judy Billups, Athens; two brothers, Wesley Arnold and Wilford Arnold, both of Athens; and seven grandchildren. John W. Burroughs Gainesville John W. Burroughs, 87, of Christopher Drive died Thursday, April 23, 1998. A native of Grady County, Mr. Burroughs was a son of the late Elizabeth Ora Duncan and John Walter Burroughs Sr. and widower of Virginia Mosley Burroughs. He attended Georgia Tech and North Carolina University and served with the Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a general building contractor and a registered land surveyor. Before moving to Gainesville in 1992, Mr. Burroughs lived in Danielsville, where he served on the city council for many years, was past president of Danielsville Civitan Club and scout master of Danielsville Boy Scout Troop 22. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Gainesville. He was preceded in death by a brother, Everett Burroughs, and two sisters, Martha Brown and Frances Griggs. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Phil Demore officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Danielsville Cemetery. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, David and Jean Burroughs, Gainesville; a granddaughter, Cathleen Virginia Burroughs, Gainesville; a grandson, John Phillip Burroughs, Gainesville; a sister, Elizabeth Golden, Texarkana, Texas; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Marion Curry, Haulahan, La.; a brother-in-law, Richard Brown, Conyers; and a sister-in-law, Lois Burroughs, Cairo, Ohio. Ernest Carter Canon Ernest Carter, 67, of 40 Benton Drive died Thursday, April 23, 1998. Mr. Carter was a son of Reba Garner Carter of Royston and the late James Carter. He was an Army veteran and served in the Korean conflict. He was a farmer, a member of Harrison McCrary Veterans of Foreign Wars Lodge 4828 and of the Baptist faith. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Pruitte Funeral Home, Royston, with the Revs. Johnny Stowe, Leon Suttles and Bruce Kesler officiating. Burial will be in Bowers Memorial Gardens with full military rites. George Cleveland Elberton George Lee Cleveland of 1816 Willie White Road died Thursday, April 23, 1998. Mr. Cleveland was a son of George C. Cleveland of Elberton and the late Margie Nell Martin Cleveland. He was employed in the granite industry and was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church. A native of Greenwood County, S.C., Mrs. Drennan was a daughter of the late Joe and Selma Irvin Sims. She graduated from Greenwood College of Commerce and was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Springs ARP Church, Cedar Springs, S.C. Earl Foster Newell, 80, of 1100 Sunlight Court died Thursday, April 23, 1998. A native of Philadelphia, the Rev. Newell was a son of the late Frieda Yohanna Cristina Schumann and Thomas H. Newell and was preceded in death by his first wife, LaVerne Newell. He was a missionary and a member of Bethany Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. Later he graduated from the Reformed Episcopal Seminary, now called the Philadelphia Theological Seminary. In 1951, he and his family went to the hills of Kentucky to serve the lord, coming to Madison in 1969 to work with Source of Light Mission Ministries. While working with the mission, he and his family opened branches in Peru, Chile and Kenya. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Duff officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Survivors include his wife, Adele Newell; a daughter, Barbara Harvard, Madison; three sons, David Newell, Madison, Richard Newell, Laurel, Md., and John Newell, Hyden, Ky.; a sister, Evelyn Wiegand, West Chester, Penn.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Varner Tatum, 61, of 267 Highland Estates died Thursday, April 23, 1998. A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Tatum was a daughter of the late George Horace and Ruby Louise Ashe Varner and widow of Clarence Tatum. He was retired from Oxford Manufacturing and was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Little Country Church with the Rev. Jimmy Owensby officiating.
