A native of Wilkes County, Mrs. Bentley was a daughter of the late Vince and Elizabeth Bufford Beard and the widow of William Bentley. She was a homemaker and member of Tignall Baptist Church. Services will be 4 p.m. today at Tignall Baptist Church with the Rev. Dale Fincher officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include two nieces and two nephews. Pallbearers will be Van Allen Bufford, Bobby Wilson, Roy Harrison Jr., Bobby Blakey, Charles Rhodes and Billy Craycraft. Memorials may be made to Tignall Baptist Church, Tignall, Ga. 30668. Hopkins Funeral Home, Washington, is in charge of arrangements. Essie Bullock Hull Essie C. Bullock, 86, of 93 Lance Lane died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Bullock was a daughter of the late Robert and Viola Patton Carter and the widow of Herschel Bullock. She started and operated Essie's Cafe for 15 years and was a member of Joy Baptist Church. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, with the Rev. Steve Stephens officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include four stepchildren, Elizabeth Dean, Lois Potts, and Pat Harris, all of Athens, and Bobbie Herring, Marietta; four sisters, Reba Patterson, Hull, Eunice Strickland and Agnes Morris, Colbert, and Geneva Gunnells, Athens; and 15 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren. Carter, 71, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998. A native of Clarke County, Mr. Carter was a son of the late Lee Hobson Carter and Neppie Dockery Carter. He was retired from Chicopee Inc. in Athens and from Georgia Pacific in Madison. He had served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Bishop Baptist Church. Services will be 3 p.m. today at Arthur Bowick's Oconee Chapel, Watkinsville, with the Revs. Larry Holmes and James Ashe officiating. Burial will be in Oconee Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Doris Sexton Carter; three daughters, Kathy Davis, Colbert, Sharon Bourne, Watkinsville, and Barbara Smith, Bogart; a sister, Ramona Patrick, Rome; a brother, Henry Carter, Winder; and eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A native of Early County, Mr. Gowan was a son of the late Jim and Trudie Annie Justice Gowan. He was retired from the U.S. Army, a veteran of the Korean War and of the Vietnam War, and a member of Woodmen of the World and Sons of Confederate Veterans. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Centerville Methodist Church with the Rev. Ronald Kirkland officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include two daughters, Pamela G. Neal, Owensboro, Ky., and Carol G. Holton, Jackson; three sons, Richard E. Gowan, Decatur, Ala., Jim A. Gowan, Jackson, and William R. Matthews, 69, of 235 Ponderosa Drive died Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998. A native of Kathleen, Mrs. Matthews was a daughter of Carl Webb and Lucy Talton Gillespie and the widow of John V. Matthews Sr. She was a retired Realtor and attended Tuckston United Methodist Church. Services will be 3 p.m. today at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, with the Rev. Buford Lockman officiating. Eva Smith Danielsville Eva Smith, 105, of 755 Adams Road died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998. A native of Burlington, Vt., Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late George and Celini LeDuc and the widow of Frank Smith. She was preceded in death by three daughters, Helen Kowalczyk, Mildred Gery, and Anna Grasso, and by a son, Clayton Smith. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Phillip Ryan officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Judson Witcher Abbeville Thomas Judson Witcher, 69, formerly of 466 Leard St., Hartwell, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998. A native of Elbert County, Mr. Witcher was a son of the late Frank Thomas and Julia Labona Dickerson Witcher. He was retired from Monroe Auto Equipment Co., was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War, and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Elbert County. Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Charles Holland, Chris Pritchett and Johnny Stowe officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
