Bellamy Commerce Lalia M. Bellamy, 93, of 116 Georgia Ave. died Saturday, June 27, 1998. A native of Banks County, Ms. Bellamy was a daughter of the late Elizabeth Ash and William Thomas Bellamy. She was a homemaker and member of Nails Creek Baptist Church. Funeral services will be 5 p.m. today at Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Paulson officiating. Burial will be in Nail Creek Baptist Church cemetery, Homer. Hazel L. Cartey Bogart Hazel Louise Cartey, 57, of 2591 Clotfelter Road died Friday, June 26, 1998. A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Cartey was a daughter of Jenni Benedict Seagraves and the late William Robert Seagraves. She was a member of Athens Freewill Baptist Church and part owner/operator of Cartey Electric. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, West, with the Revs. J.L. Peyton and Bill Ricketts officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Norman C. Cartey; a daughter, Lynne C. Stiles, Athens; two sons, Keith E. Cartey and Jason M. Cartey, both of Bogart; a sister, Linda Tweedell, Bogart; five brothers, Bobby Seagraves, Morrow, Billy Seagraves, Hull, Charles Seagraves, Colbert; and Johnny Seagraves and Richard Seagraves, both of Athens; and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to WRAF in Toccoa or WMSL in Athens. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Albert M. Gates Jackson Albert Martin Gates Jr., 78, died Friday, June 26, 1998. A native of Jeffersonville, Mr. Gates was a son of the late Annette Rycroft and Dr. Albert Martin Gates. He was a graduate of Brewton-Parker College, attended the University of Georgia, and was graduated from the University of Florida in 1941 where he was a member of the baseball team. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Third Army under General George S. Patton. Mr. Gates was a dairy farmer and was retired from the State Board of Pardons and Parole. He was the Soil Conservation "Man of the Year" in 1960, served on the Board of Oconee Rural Electric Association, and served as a deacon of the Jeffersonville Baptist Church. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Hughes officiating. Burial will be in the Jeffersonville cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Smith Gates, Athens; and two sisters, Camella Gates Whipple, Vidalia, and Edith Gates Smith, Statesboro. Gay, 74, of 149 Strickland St. died Wednesday, June 24, 1998. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Gay was a daughter of the late Mattie and Rufus Smith. She was a member of New Dorsey Tabernacle Church. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday at the Mount Zion Baptist Church, Stephens, with the Rev. Calvin Turner officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the East Lawn cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Eddie Lee Gay; stepmother, Mandy Smith, Stephens; three daughters, Betty Jean Ware, Cincinnati, Ohio, Angela Smith and Nellie M. Barnett, both of Athens; two sons, Eddie Smith and Robert Lee Smith, both of Athens; one brother, Leroy Smith, Stephens; and 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A native of Stephens County, Mrs. Maxwell was married to the late Thomas C. Maxwell and was a daughter of the late Thomas Alfred and Sara Ann Holcomb Franklin. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nelle Akin, and a son, Howard Maxwell. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. David Sosebee and Mr. Clarence Davis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include six daughters, Dr. Irene Murphy, Hanover, Penn., Annie Ruth Sowers, Tequesta, Fla., Catherine Celeste Holl, Palm City, Fla., Johnie Sue Wood, Norcross, Mary Land, Gough, and Dr. Carolyn Jenkins, Charleston, S.C.; two sons, Roy Franklin "Jack" Maxwell, Marietta, and Ralph Maxwell, Jupiter, Fla.; and 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters, Agnes Freed, Pawleys Island, S.C., and Frances Linck, Ocala, Fla.; one brother, Newt Rice, Toccoa; and five grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and three great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Simmons Bowman Martha Elera Wallace Simmons, 69, of 3569 King Hall Mill Road died Thursday, June 25, 1998. A native of Elbert County, Mrs. Simmons was married to the late R.C. "Red" Simmons and was a daughter of the late Ara Bryant and Walter Wallace. She was retired from Milliken-Humphres Plant and Wal-Mart and was a member of Fork Creek Baptist Church, the Friendship Club and the W.M.U. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Fork Creek Baptist Church, Bowman, with the Revs. Calvin Coile and Harrison Pressley officiating. Survivors include four daughters, Carol Granier, Townville, S.C., Brenda Deal, Westminster, S.C., Annette Singleton, Toccoa, and Debra King, Harve de Grace, Md.; one son, Charles "Tony" Bryant, Bowman; three sisters, Doris Ashworth and Patricia Bryant, both of Bowman, and Shirley House, Danielsville; two brothers, Alton Wallace, Greenwood, and Leon Wallace, Bowman; and six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and a number of stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Emory Waters Commerce Emory "Stump" Waters, 86, of 162 South Victoria St. died Friday, June 26, 1998. A native of Jackson County, Mr. Waters was a son of the late Nettie Elizabeth Lester and P.Y. Waters. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Luis Ortiz officiating. The body will be placed in the chapel at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Gardens.
