A native of Madison County, Mrs. Ellis passed away at home - the home she helped her parents construct in 1929. Mrs. Ellis was the daughter of the late James I. and Susan O'Kelly Chandler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon F. Ellis Sr. Mrs. Ellis graduated from the University of Georgia in 1931 where she was selected as a member of Phi Kappa Phi. Following graduation, she served with the County Extension Service in Irwin and Crisp counties. She returned with her family to Madison County in 1947 to be near her aging parents. At this time she began a teaching career where she touched the lives of many students in Madison and Jackson counties. She retired from the Commerce city schools in 1972. Mrs. Ellis received her Masters in Science in the early 60s, but her greatest honor was serving her Lord Jesus Christ. She was a lifelong member of Union Baptist Church, where she enjoyed teaching and studying the Bible. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Walter Singletary officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Pat Ellis, Commerce, and their sons, Bob, John and Craig, and her son and daughter-in-law Leon "Lee" Ellis and Mary Ellis, Gainesville, and their children Patrick, Kristin, Lance and Meredith. Mrs. Ellis had four great-grandchildren. Little-Ward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Lucy Hood Elberton Lucy Alma Johnson Hood died Sunday, May 24, 1998. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Hood was a daughter of the late Homer "Ham" and Cassie Griffieth Johnson and was the widow of Willie Melvin Hood. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Lue Hood Bostwick. She was a member of Colbert Grove Baptist Church. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Colbert Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Ronnie Gantt, Henry Strong, William Jennings, J.W. Evans and Joe Barnett officiating. Burial will be in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Roberta Hood Crawford, Fairborn; six sons, Edward Lee Hood, Atlanta, David Hood and Harold Michael Hood, both of Carlton, Randolph Hood, New Orleans, La., Leonard Hood, Grayslake, Ill., and Willie Marvin Hood, Fort Belvoir, Va.; four sisters, Chattie Mae Arnold and Annie James, both of Athens, Zettie Lee Johnson, Colbert, and Bertha Jones, Detroit; a brother, Eddie Johnson, Colbert; and nine grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Nelson Long, deacons Roosevelt Howard, Gary Hill, Willie Waller and William Wooten, and Brother Charles Norman. Honorary pallbearers will be Edward Hood, Randolph Hood, Michael Hood, Reginald Crawford, Jason Hood, David Hood, Leonard Hood, Marvin Hood, Ervin Crawford and Eddie Hood. Nieces will serve as flower bearers. Shiloh and Colbert grove deaconesses and mothers will serve as honorary flower bearers. C.W. Phelps Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Clute Nelson Athens Clute Barrow Nelson, 6, of 320 Milledge Heights died Wednesday, May 27, 1998. A native of Clarke County, Clute was a son of Donald Lainhart and Phyllis Barrow Nelson of Athens. He had attended St. Joseph's Catholic School kindergarten and was a student of Oglethorpe Avenue Elementary 1st grade. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church. Dr. Jon Appleton and Frank Granger will officiate. Burial will be in Oconee Hill Cemetery. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include grandparents, Judge James and Phyllis Barrow, Athens, and Art and Beth Nelson, College Park; a brother, Arthur Lee Nelson, Athens; aunts and uncles, Terry and Linda Nelson, Albuquerque, N.M., Lee Ann Weeks, Atlanta, Ruth and Mike Bracewell, Madison, Jim and Sallyanne Barrow, Stephens, and Tommy and Kathy Barrow, Church and Hal Crow, and John and Victoria Barrow, all of Athens; cousins, Jennifer Weeks, Ashlee Weeks, Parker Crow, Eleanor Crow, Michael Crow, Steven Barrow, Jim Barrow, Sam Barrow, James Barrow and Ruth Barrow. James Saunders Winder James Randolph Saunders, 73, died Tuesday, May 26, 1998. Mr. Saunders was a son of the late William Curtis and Lillie Mae S. Saunders. He was a retired Barrow County building inspector and a longtime builder in Barrow County. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at Smith Funeral Home with the Revs. Ronald Hewatt and Billy Ginn officiating. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Survivors include his wife, Karla D. Saunders; a daughter, Pam Clark, Carlton; a son, Rudy Saunders, Gainesville; two stepsons, Jay Rogers, Mississippi, and Tracy Rogers, Massachusetts; four sisters, Mary Ann Payne and Marie Sauls, both of Winder, Lucy Smith, Loganville, and Beggie Coe, Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, Walter Saunders, Douglasville, and Buddy Saunders, Winder; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Todd Royston Beulah Laskoski Todd, 84, of 105 Old Elberton Road died Wednesday, May 27, 1998. A native of Anderson County, S.C., Mrs. Todd was a daughter of the late William and Ida Taylor Laskoski and was the widow of Ansel Ligon Todd. She was preceded in death by a son, William "Bill" Evans Todd. She was a seamstress and retired bookkeeper from Harper Moter Lines, Elberton, and was a member of Roberts Presbyterian Church, Anderson, S.C. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Roberts Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Survivors include a daughter, Athleen Sharp, Westminster, S.C.; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The family is at the residence and will receive friends 7-9 p.m. today at Pruitte Funeral Home. Rita A. Weaver Hull Rita Ann Weaver, 44, of Carl Epps Road died Monday, May 25, 1998. A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Weaver was a daughter of Joyce Woodard Edwards and the late Charlie Hoyt Whitley. Survivors, in addition to her mother, include her husband, Earnest Weaver; two sons, Erik Weaver and Scotty Weaver, both of Hull; two sisters, Sandra G.
