Booth Madison The Rev. W.T. Booth, 78, of 905 Lakeview Drive died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998. A native of Greene County, Mr. Booth was a son of the late Albert H. and Loniebelle Phelps Booth. He was pastor at a number of churches including First Baptist Norcross, First Baptist College Park, Brookhaven Baptist Church for 24 years, and Madison Baptist Church for 10 years, where he was baptized and ordained as a minister in 1941. He attended school in Morgan County and at Brewton-Parker Junior College prior to receiving an A.B. degree from Mercer University in 1943, where he graduated with honors and served as president of the student body. He attended Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky., receiving a Th.M. degree in 1946, serving as president of the graduating class. He excelled in athletics, participating on the varsity basketball and baseball teams. During his many years in the ministry, he served as president of the Atlanta Baptist Ministers' Conference, president of the Georgia Baptist Pastors' Conference, and as member of the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board of Directors, the Georgia Baptist Convention Executive Committee, and the Georgia Baptist Convention Budget Committee. He wrote Sunday school lessons and a devotional series for The Christian Index and was a charter member and chaplain for the North DeKalb Rotary Club. He retired from the ministry in 1987. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Madison Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Ross officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Smith Booth; two sons, Dr. Robert P. Booth, Jacksonville, Fla., and W.T. (Tom) Booth Jr., Atlanta; two sisters, Beatrice Hanson and Louise Bray, both of Madison; and two grandchildren. The family will receive friends 3-5 p.m. today at Simmons Funeral Home. James Brock Sr. Ila James Wesley Brock Sr., 83, whose ministry touched the lives of thousands of young people in the Athens area, died Friday of a heart attack. A former pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, "Preacher Brock" and his beloved wife Frances, who preceded him in death by three years, had for the past thirty-eight years operated Camp Maranatha, a free camp for children located near Ila. Known for its strong Biblical emphasis, Camp Maranatha has pointed thousands to Jesus Christ while providing a week at no cost of swimming, horseback riding and an exciting camp experience. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday at Bluestone Baptist Church. Revs. Ray Jenkins and Cecil Holcomb will officiate. Interment will be in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. Survivors include a son, Rev. James W. Brock, Jr. of Blairsville; three daughters, Rebecca Brock Reynolds and Kathryn Brock Napier, both of Deltona, Fla., and Gay Brock Adams of Ellenton, Fla.; and thirteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 4-6 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Lord & Stephens Funeral Homes, Madison Chapel. Ada Ponder Chandler Elberton Ada Ponder Chandler, 90, of 2515 Washington Highway died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Chandler was a daughter of the late Gilbert and Mary Jane Banks Ponder, and was married to the late Lewis Chandler. She was a homemaker and member of Piney Mountain Baptist Church. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Piney Mountain Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Chandler Hudson, Elberton; five sons, Phil Chandler, Dwight Chandler, L.C. Chandler, David Chandler, and Ronnie Chandler, all of Weaverville, N.C.; a sister, Lidia Phee, Honea Path, S.C.; and 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Julian Deen Clement Boone, N.C. Julian Deen Clement, 90, of 163 Shadowline Drive, Boone, N.C., formerly of Athens, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 1998. A native of Lincolnton, Mr. Clement was a son of the late John Thomas and Ila Pruitt Clement. He was of the Baptist faith and received his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Georgia. He was a retired civil engineer with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Soil, and Water Conservation, and a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II. Services will be 1 p.m. today at Evergreen Memorial Park Mausoleum, Athens, with the Rev. Luther Fouche officiating. Survivors include a brother, John Edward Clement, Chesapeake, Va.; a niece, Carolyn Clement Thompson, Boone, N.C.; and 10 other nieces and nephews. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home, Boone, N.C., and Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, are in charge of arrangements. J.T. Cowart Athens J.T. Cowart, 66, of 250 Denny Towers died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998. A native of Georgia, Mr. Cowart was a son of the late Fred and Etheleene Baugh Cowart. He was a painter. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Ivie Funeral Home with the Revs. Jimmy Owensby and Hilton Pervis officiating. Burial will be in Chandler Cemetery, Commerce. Survivors include a sister, Louise Swain, Commerce; and a brother, George Cowart, Commerce. Beulah Pless Gilstrap Alto Beulah Pless Gilstrap, 92, of Gilstrap Road died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998. A native of Hall County, Mrs. Gilstrap was a daughter of the late Rev. Alvin "Ab" and Indiana Wright Pless and was married to the late Seaborn Gilstrap. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorraine Grier, and two sons, Troyce Gilstrap and Cline Gilstrap. She was a charter member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church and retired from Mount Vernon Mills. Services will be 2 p.m. today at Mount Zion United Methodist Church with the Revs. Woodrow Hix, Clyde Garrison, and Paul Morris officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include two daughters, Rosita Glenn and Julia Riddle, both of Alto; a son, Burton Gilstrap, Alto; three sisters, Lessie Brewer and Doris Varville, both of Gainesville, and Flornell Purcell, Lula; a brother, Talmadge Pless, Lula; and seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. A native of Elbert County, Mrs. Hulme was a daughter of the late Alex P. and Anna Thornton Snellings. She was a member of Dewy Rose Baptist Church, retired from Elberton Mills, and a homemaker. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Purvis officiating. Burial will be in Dewy Rose Baptist Church Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, James M. Hulme Jr.; three sons, James Donald Hulme, Elberton, Douglas Warren Hulme, Knoxville, Tenn., and John Thornton Hulme, Cabot, Ark.; a sister, Mildred Driver, Bowman; a brother, Arnold Snellings, Decatur; and five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Matilda Lowe Athens Matilda Dorsey Lowe, 95, of 365 Vine St. died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Lowe was a daughter of the late Bob and Martha Dorsey. She was a member of the Healing Temple Church. Services will be 2:30 p.m. today at Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church on Rose St. with the Rev. David T. Batts officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Martha Dupree, Athens; a son, Willie Robert Dupree, Athens; and six grandchildren, 13 great- grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
