A native of Barrow County, Mrs. Appleby was a daughter of the late Mose and Neva Morris Higgins and the widow of Robert Appleby. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Carl Baptist Church. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Carl Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Ray Banks officiating. Carter-Stewart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Alice Beall Athens Alice Johnson Beall, 95, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998. A native of Putnam County, Miss Beall was a daughter of the late Woodson Johnson and Belle Slaughter Beall. She was a graduate of the Georgia Normal College in Milledgeville and the University of Georgia, where she was the first honor graduate. She continued her education with graduate studies at Columbia University, Colorado State University, Ohio State University, Michigan State University and Peabody College. She taught for 46 years, including 15 years teaching high school science in Granite Hill, Cedartown and Thomaston. In 1935 she joined the home economics department of the University of Georgia, where she taught for 33 years, retiring as associate professor in 1968. Her many memberships and offices include charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators, member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education, life member of Phi Upsilon Omicron Honor Society in Home Economics and honorary member of Future Homemakers of America. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday at Philadelphia Methodist Church with the Rev. Ben Strength officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Survivors include two sisters, Lenore B. Clara Blackmon Athens Clara "Jackie" Blackmon, 93, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998. A native of Oconee County, Mrs. Blackmon was a daughter of the late Lucious and Dora Irene Leverett Turnbull. She was a homemaker, a senior volunteer for Athens Community Council on Aging, and a member of First Christian Church of Athens, Gleaners Sunday School Class at the church, Circle #1, Athens Business Girls and "60 More or Less" Club. A native of Elbert County, Mrs. Grimes was a daughter of the late John Easton and Lucy Mildred Bell Hulme. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Carl B. Carlson and Sidney Bell Grimes, and a son, Larry Carlson. She was a member of Falling Creek Baptist Church in Elberton and a homemaker. A World War II veteran, he was employed at Ivy-Coile Dodge for more than 30 years and was an active member of Colbert Baptist Church. She worked at Georgia Boot in Flowery Branch for 18 years, worked in the cafeteria at Winder-Barrow Middle School for 10 years and was a member of First Baptist Church in Alto. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home with the Revs. J.W. Helton and Grant Wade officiating. Burial will be in Nazareth United Methodist Church. Survivors include a brother, M.C. Wade, Winder; and nieces and nephews. Marian Richardson Athens Marian McMichael Richardson, 89, of 515 Riverview Road died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998. A native of Jackson in Butts County, Georgia, Mrs. Richardson was born on April 12, 1908. She was the daughter of Nancy Virgie Maddox McMichael and Joseph Emory McMichael. She was educated in Jackson schools and was a graduate of Georgia State College for Women. Following graduation, she taught school in Toombs County, and there married Joel Condor Richardson, who preceded her in death in 1990. She lived in Albany from 1937 to 1946 when she moved to Athens. Mrs. Richardson was involved in many organizations in Athens. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, served as president of various PTAs, was actively involved with the YWCO, serving several terms as president, and was a Regent of the Elijah Clark Chapter of the DAR. She participated in a number of community and charitable activities, including chairing the city residential drive for the Community Chest, presently the United Way. She was one of the first three women selected to serve as a juror in the Superior Court of Clarke County. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Nan and Fred Leathers and Claire and Carlton James, all of Athens; four grandchildren, Fran Leathers Crowell and husband Steve, Agoura Hills, Calif., Ben Leathers and wife Lee, Atlanta, and Catherine James and Ashley James, both of Charlotte, N.C.; two great-grandsons, eight sisters and a brother.
