He was a retired poultry farmer and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. A native of Franklin County, Mr. Chastain was a son of the late George W. Chastain and Dede Floyd Chastain. He was a retired farmer and carpenter and was of the Baptist faith. "Doc" and Alphonsia Jane Cotton Watson and was the widow of Ralph Woodrow Patterson. She was preceded in death by a son, Grady Mack Pitts. A native of Muscogee County, Dr. Wilkes was a son of the late Arthur Wilburn Wilkes Sr. and Frances Snell Wilkes, Columbus and Newnan. He was a graduate of Columbus High School, Emory at Oxford College and Emory University School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry for thirty years in Monroe. He was an active participant of the civil rights movement, was involved in the Monroe community theatre and was an avid sailor. In fulfillment of his long-standing wish, Dr. Wilkes body was donated to medical science through the Medical College of Georgia.
