A native of Newton County, Mrs. Balchin was a daughter of the late Rev. Alfred T. and Birdie Almond Hind and was the widow of Ralph W. Balchin Sr. She was a school teacher, a homemaker and a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, where she served as pianist for more than 50 years. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem UMC with the Revs. Kevin Cooley and John Heckman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Survivors include a daughter, Emily B. Swicegood, Brunswick; two sons, Thomas Balchin, Burlington, N.C., and Ralph W. Balchin Jr., Fayetteville; a sister, Glynn Chesnut, South Bend, Ind.; a brother, A.T. Hind Jr., Spartanburg, S.C.; and five grandchildren. Hicks Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Alice Berryman Greensboro Alice Anne Shivar Berryman, 63, of 1020 Tree A Coon Place died Thursday, July 30, 1998. A native of Wake County, N.C., Mrs. Berryman was a daughter of the late Beulah Hinson and James Homer Shivar. She was a 1956 graduate of the University of Georgia with a master's degree in education. She was a school teacher in Clarke County schools for 28 years and in DeKalb County schools for two years. She was a member of Walker United Methodist Church and Alpha Delta Kappa sorority. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Walker UMC with Revs. Rick Maeser and David Shivar officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Evergreen Memorial Park, Athens. Survivors include her husband, W.C. "Bill" Berryman; two daughters, Becky Berryman Stevens, Athens, and Cathy Berryman, Atlanta; a son, W.C. Berryman Jr., Athens; a sister, Rebecca Martin, Athens; a brother, J.H. Shivar Jr., Watkinsville; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. McCommons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. John P. Black Hull John P. Black of Sanford Community, Hull, Ga., died Wednesday, July 29, 1998. He celebrated his 54th birthday on July 26th. He was the son of Ramie Turner Black of Cleveland, Ga., and the late Issac P. Black. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda Standridge Black, two daughters and sons-in-law, Johnette and Butch Appleby of Hull, Ga., and Amy and Dennis Smock of Danielsville, Ga., and his in-laws, Talmer and Oma Standridge of Cleveland, Ga. He was "Papa" to five grandchildren, Kristen, Branson and Matthew Smock and Stephen and Kaitlin Appleby. John was owner and sole technician of Black's Appliance Repair Inc. He never won any honors for his job, but had hundreds of valued, loyal customers. John was an active member of Gordon's Chapel United Methodist Church where he had served on the Administrative Council for numerous years. He was also very actively involved in the Athens Area Emmaus Community. Visitation will be Friday, July 31, and Saturday, August 1, from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 2, 1998, at Gordons Chapel UMC with the Rev. Robert Passmore and the Rev. A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Brewer was a daughter of the the late Joseph Clayton and Vira Gibby Elrod and was the widow of James Brewer. She was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Brewer. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of God. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hopewell Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Steve Welch officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Dennis Brown Colbert Dennis Edward "Unk" Brown, 47, of 2614 Hardeman Morris Road died Wednesday, July 29, 1998. A native of South Carolina, Mr. Brown was a son of the late John Ashley and Mildred Miles Brown. He lived in Athens most of his life, was self-employed as a brick mason and of the Baptist faith. A native of Jackson County, Ms. Faulkner was a daughter of Betty Joe Beasley, Banks County, and James McAuthor, Glennville. She was a 1978 graduate of Banks County High School and a member of Homer First Baptist Church, Homer. Mason Funeral Home, Commerce, is in charge of arrangements. Arlene Koedel Pittsburgh Arlene Sue Koedel, 52, formerly of Athens died Feb. 17, 1998. Mrs. Koedel was a daughter of the late F. Courtney and Gladys Donoghue. She will be remembered for her work at Athens Regional Medical Center Development Council and the NCAA men's tennis tournaments. Most recently she was involved with the Pennsylvania Special Olympics. Graveside memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Jon Appleton officiating. Survivors include her husband, Gilbert E. Koedel; a son, Scott S. Koedel; and a sister, Diane Swartz. Neal Sr., 80, of 624 Old Post Road died Wednesday, July 29, 1998. Mr. Neal was born December 25, 1917, the son of the late James Richard Neal and Viola Law Morris Neal, Kite. Mr. Neal was a graduate of Adrian High School and the University of Georgia with a B.S. in agriculture. He was employed by the State Office of Agriculture Adjustment Administration, Athens, Ga., 1940-41, and transferred to Farm Security Administration as assistant County Supervisor, Appling, Ga., in 1941. He was transferred to Eatonton, Ga., 1942-44, as an associate FSA supervisor. He became County Supervisor with Farmers Home Administration, Madison, Ga., where he served from March 1944-Dec. 1961. Harry was FmHA District Director 1961-1984. Throughout the years he received many honors and awards for outstanding job performances. In 1951 he received the National Superior Service award in agriculture in Washington, D.C. In later years he received the National Sustained Superior Work Performance award in agriculture on three occasions. In 1982 he received the distinguished FmHA award from the University of Georgia Alumni association for outstanding profession service. Under his supervision the first Rural Housing Loan for FmHA under that particular authority was made in Georgia in December 1949 and this house was the first in the nation to be completed. In 1962, the last year Harry was FmHA Supervisor in Morgan County, the Morgan County FmHA program was selected as the most outstanding FmHA credit program in the nation. In "After a Hundred Years - The 1962 Yearbook of Agriculture," a chapter in the book, Credit Plus Program, gave an account of the FmHA credit program in Morgan County. Mr. Neal was a member of Madison Kiwanis Club 1944-84, and served as president of the club in 1949. In 1959 he was honored by Madison Kiwanis members with a bronze plaque and a special program in recognition of outstanding Kiwanis and community service. He served as a member of the Morgan County Hospital authority and was chairman for several terms. He was a Director of the Bank of Madison 1961-91 and a member of Madison Investment Company 1957-89. Mr. Neal is survived by his wife, Lynne Claxton Neal; a daughter, Lynda Neal Weston, Athens; a son, Harry K. Neal Jr., Dalton; two granddaughters, Lynne Weston Bottoms and Laura Weston Wilfong, Athens; two grandsons, Jonathan Claxton Neal, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Zachery Lee Neal, Dalton; and a great-grandson, Charles Benson Bottoms IV, Athens. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. J. Carl Lawson, Swainsboro, and two brothers, Richard S. Neal, Swainsboro, and Henry G. Neal, Dublin. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 1998, at Madison Baptist Church where Mr. Neal served as a deacon for several years. Dr. James Ross, pastor of Madison Baptist Church will officiate at the church and the Rev. Benson Bottoms will conduct the entombment service. Noble Sr. She was a housewife, English teacher, theatre manager, librarian and secretary, and a member of First Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, with Dr. Joseph Berry, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, in I.O.O.F.
