Head Athens Stanford "Sandy" B. Head died, July 15, 1999, following a stroke. He was born April 14, 1919, the son of Dr. Ralph and Margrett Head of Pittsfield, Mass. He graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1936 and from Taft School, Watertown, Conn., in 1938. He entered Williams College in 1938 and served as President of the Dramatic Society, founder of the Adams Memorial Theater and member of Zeta Psi Fraternity. He was active in drama and entertainment, producing and directing a number of variety shows and musicals throughout his life including the Birshire Amateur Circus at age 12. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Calvary. After basic training and Officer Candidate School he was assigned to the Quartermaster Corps, Remount Service, 1st Calvary. In August 1944, he served in the China-Burma-India Theater as a Pack Officer in the 475th Infantry long-range penetration-combat battalion, Merrill's Marauders. He was part of the Mars Task Force that opened the Burma Road in March 1945. He earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge as well as other medals for his heroism. After being discharged in 1946, he returned to Williams College and graduated in 1947 with a B.S. in English literature. He went to work for Brown Company, Berlin, New Hampshire. He traveled the six Southeast States. He left Brown Co. and joined Rones Carton & Associates, Atlanta, until his retirement in 1984. In September 1954, he purchased property in Athens that was deeded to a freed slave. He modernized the cabin and enlarged it - it became known as Headacres. For 45 years he operated Headacres as a retreat and home to several generations of University of Georgia students and faculty, providing financial aid and low-cost housing. He was a mentor, counselor, role model and teacher for hundreds who have become part of his extended family. He was involved with the Humane Society, Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic, China-Burma-India Veterans Association, the 475th Infantry Association, and Merrill's Marauders. He is survived by two brothers, John J. Head, Sr. and Ralph D. Head, Jr., a sister, Margrett Head Daniels, nephews John J. Head Jr., Christopher C. Head, Jeffrey C. Head, Alexander E. Head, Timothy C. Head and D. Scott Daniels, nieces Penelope Head Bigmore, Cordelia Head, Deborah Daniels and Pamela Hall Daniels Drumheller and many great-nephews and -nieces and extended-family members. A memorial service was held July 17, 1999, at Bridges Funeral Home in Athens as he had donated his body to the Medical College of Georgia. A memorial and inurnment service is planned in Pittsfield, Mass., where his cremated remains will be buried. A scholarship fund has been established at the University of Georgia in his memory. Fannie Mae Henderson Athens Fannie Mae Henderson, 63, of 335 Coleridge Court, died Friday, July 30, 1999. A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Henderson was a daughter of the late Otis Sanders and Earnestine Henderson. she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dorothy L. Henderson. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Springfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Early B. Brown officiating. The body will be placed the church at 1 p.m. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Christine Henderson, Santa Barbara, Calif.; a son, George Lee Henderson, Stone Mountain; two brothers, Herbert Henderson, Hershel Henderson, both of Athens; and five grandchildren. Herring, 74, of 829 Old Ila Road, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999. Mrs. Herring was a daughter of the late John and Janie Jordan Glenn and was the widow of Ben Herring. She was a sewing machine operator at Blue Bell. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Ivie Funeral Home with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Ila Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Evelyn Ramsey, Hull; a son, Johnny Leon Herring, Bishop; a niece, raised in the home, Birdie Nix; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Mildred E.C. Ivester Martin Mildred Erlene Cheek Ivester, 73, of Highway 106, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999. A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Ivester was a daughter of the late James and Ollie Whiten Cheek and was the widow of Stephens Odis Ivester. She was preceded in death by a son, Stephens Gary Ivester. She was a homemaker and was a member of Broad River Baptist Church and the Joy Agers. Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Broad River Baptist Church with the Revs. Ernest Ivester and Jewell Gaines officiating. Burial will be in Franklin Memorial Gardens. Survivors include five daughters, Carolyn Cannon, Eastanollee, Sandra Buffington, Royston, Peggy J. Mary Cathryn Kern Jones Hull Mary Cathryn Kern Jones, 86, of 359 Brown Wood Drive, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999. Mrs. Jones was a daughter of the late Clifford D. and Savanna Sullivan Kern and was the widow of Virgil Jones. She was a homemaker and was of the Methodist faith. Services will be Wednesday at Gholson Funeral Home, McLeansboro, Ill. Burial will be in Corinth Cemetery, Macedonia, Ill. Survivors include two daughters, Betty J. Babe, Hull, and Kathy Faye Boulier, Port Herron, Mich.; a son, Donald Norman Jones, Aurora, Ill.; two sisters, Katheline Sanders, Bloomington, Ill., and Beulah Lahti, California; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Easton Kinnebrew Americus Easton Hulme Kinnebrew, 78, died Friday, July 30, 1999. A native of Winder, Mr. Kinnebrew attended the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater as a captain in the infantry and receiving the Bronze Star during the Battle of the Bulge. He founded Kinnebrew Co., a men's clothing store, in 1947 and maintained an interest in it until his death. He served as president of Menswear Retailers of Georgia and later as national president of Menswear Retailers of America. He was past-president of Americus Rotary Club and Americus Country Club; a member of Gridiron Secret Society at the University of Georgia and a member of First United Methodist Church. In 1998, he was awarded the Order of St. Maurice by the Distinguished Infantryman's Association, which honors armed forces veterans who have distinguished themselves in community and business service. Memorial services were Sunday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jarrell Lillard officiating. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Duckworth Kinnebrew; two daughters, Carolyn Kinnebrew Turner, Americus, and Jerry Kinnebrew Scruggs, Athens; a son, Easton Hulme Kinnebrew III, Americus; a brother, retired Vice Adm. She was retired from Commerce Sportwear and was of the Holiness faith. A native of Stephens County, Mrs. Rudeseal was a daughter of the late Joseph Lester and Nora Ivester Carter and was the widow of William A. Rudeseal. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shelby Rudeseal, and two sons, Bobby Rudeseal and Kenneth Rudeseal. She was a homemaker, a retired nurse and a waitress. A native of Fulton County, Mr. Veal was a son of the late Fordren Veal and Annie Sue McCannon Veal Rogers. He was a retired Atlanta policeman, was a U.S. Navy veteran and was of the Baptist faith. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Meadow Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Joe Dooley officiating. Survivors include an uncle and many cousins. Mr. Wheeler was a son of the late J.G. and Marelle H. Wheeler and was the widower of Claris B. Wheeler. He was a self-employed farmer, and was a member and deacon of Zion Baptist Church. He was a 32nd-degree Mason at Livingston Lodge. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Zion Baptist Church with the Revs. Don Leaptrot and Greg Judd officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
