A native of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Byrd was a daughter of the late Dr. Holmes and Virginia Dobyns Byrd. She lived in Athens from 1946 until 1960 and returned to Virginia where she was employed as a secretary by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville for over 20 years. After taking early retirement she returned to Athens in 1995. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Bridges Funeral Home with the Rev. Grady T. Wigley officiating. Survivors include a sister, Catherine Byrd Slaughter, Athens; two nieces, Nancy Lynn Slaughter, Smyrna, and Manie Virginia Slaughter Meade, Buford; and several cousins. The family will receive friends after the services at the funeral home. Chalmers Andrew Crocker Alto Chalmers Andrew Crocker, 86, died Monday, May 3, 1999. A native of Banks County, Mr. Crocker was a son of the late Andrew and Caroline Holland Crocker. He was a retired brick mason and a Monument Sales man. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church and Lula Masonic Lodge 352. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Rock Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Billy Autry and Dennis Campbell officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Williams Crocker; two daughters, Barbara Parks, Leesburg, Fla., and Betty Redmon, Lula; five sons, Hollis Crocker and Melvin Crocker, both of Lula, Gary Crocker, Mount Airy, Michael Crocker, Oakwood, and Dwayne Crocker, Gillsville; two sisters, Emma Bell Jordan and Dovie Garrish, both of Alto; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Friar Toccoa Laverne Mize Friar, 63, of 3453 Rothell Road died Tuesday, May 4, 1999. A native of Stephens County, Mrs. Friar was a daughter of the late Ronzie and Katie Lou Fulbright Mize and was the widow of Walter Mitchell "Moot" Friar. She was retired from Coats American after 43 years of service and worked for a number of years in food service with Georgia Baptist Assembly. She was a volunteer with the Ladies Auxiliary at Stephens County Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Savage officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include five sisters, Sue Spencer, Olivia Massey, Anne Adams, Linda Burden and Ronzilene Simmons, all of Toccoa; and three brothers, Mathious Mize, Junior Mize and Nick Mize, all of Toccoa. Hill Stone Mountain Charles Lee Hill, 35, of 5439 Leatherstocking Lane died Sunday, May 2, 1999. A native of Habersham County, Mr. Hill was a son of Frances Wood Hill and Charles O. A native of Cordova, Tenn., Mr. Yates attended Shelby County public schools. He was born again in 1944. During World War II, he served three years in the Army Air Force. He attended Memphis State College and received his BSAE and MSAE degrees from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Until his retirement in 1983, he was a hydraulic engineer with the Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture. A private graveside service was held on May 4 at the Reid Cemetery, Eads, Tenn. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Adelle Bryan Yates, Athens; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Paul Yates Weisgal and Benjamin H. Weisgal; a son, David Paul Yates; two grandchildren, Leah Yates Weisgal and Bryan Asher Weisgal, all of New York; and one sister, Chloe Anne Yates, Nashville, Tenn.
