Addis Gainesville Lillie I. Addis, 89, formerly of Cornelia, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999. A native of Habersham County, Mrs. Addis was a daughter of the late John Robert and Margaret Ella Anderson Addis. She was a retired cook from the Dairy Queen of Cornelia after 10 years of service and was a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church. Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Whitfield Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Flynn officiating. Burial will be in the Welcome Home Baptist Church cemetery. Survivors include a sister, Mamie A. Mote, Demorest; a brother, Clifford Addis, Joshua Tree, Calif.; nieces and nephews. Duffie Burgess Toccoa Duffie Dwain Burgess, 74, of 122 Addington Drive died Monday, May 3, 1999. A native of Stephens County, Mr. Duffie was a son of the late William John and Ella Kelley Burgess. He was a graduate of Stephens County High School and the University of Georgia where he received a BA degree in accounting. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church, a member of the sanctuary choir, director of the Adult II Sunday School department, and an active deacon. He was former choir director of Liberty Hill Baptist Church and was a member of the Stephens County Hospital Authority where he served as secretary and treasurer and chairman of the finance committee. He was a member of Toccoa Chamber of Commerce and was treasurer of Stephens County Historical Society. He was a member of the Georgia CPA Association and was owner and operator of Burgess Accounting, Toccoa, for 20 years. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with the Revs. Henry Fields and Byron Kennerly officiating. Burial will be in Roselane Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mary Vaughn Burgess; three daughters, Julia Symmonds, Temple, Texas, Melody C. Eddy, Atlanta, and Jan Couch, Toccoa; a son, Mike Couch, Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Geneva Collins, Eastanollee, and Jimmie Lou Elrod, Martin; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be members of the Stephens County Hospital Authority, Elliott Caudell, Ferman Gregory, W.C. Clary, Don Foster, Keller Cheek and Bill Hunt. Flowers are optional and memorials may be made to the Chapel Fund of First Baptist Church. Ralph M. Goss Jr. Ralph Montgomery Goss Jr., 77, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999. A native Athenian, Mr. Goss lived in recent years in Ponte Vedra, Fla. He is survived by his wife, the former Mattilene Causey of Bowling Green, Ky. He was the son of the late Dr. Ralph M. Goss Sr. and his late wife, the former Callender Lumpkin of Athens, and the grandson of the late Judge Edwin King Lumpkin and his wife, the former Mary Bryan Thomas, Athens. He was a graduate of Baylor Prep School, Chattanooga, Tenn. and the University of Georgia School of Business. He was a member of Chi Phi fraternity. During World War II he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy, first with a tanker in the Atlantic and later with a LST in the Pacific. Engaging in the battle of Leyte Gulf, he received the Philippine Liberation Star. He served as general agent for the All-State Insurance Company in both Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He retired in 1986. His father, Dr. Ralph Goss Sr. was Athens' first surgeon and founded the Athens General Hospital in 1921. His grandmother, Mrs. Edwin K. Lumpkin Sr. founded the first Garden Club in America and served as its first secretary. His great-grandfather was Joseph Henry Lumpkin, the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia and for whom the University of Georgia's Lumpkin School of Law was named. Judge Lumpkin's brother, Wilson Lumpkin, was governor of Georgia and Lumpkin Street in Athens was named for him. Mr. Goss was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. While in Athens, he was a member of First United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Oconee Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Wesley Stephens officiating. Mr. Goss is survived by five first cousins, Mrs. Marion Lumpkin Jones and Ms. Stefanie Foss, both of Athens, Edward King Lumpkin III, Muncie, Ind., Steve Upson, Greensboro, N.C., and Joe Foil, New York, N.Y. Pallbearers will be Leo Costa, Atlanta; T.J. Pendergrast, Atlanta; Louis Trousdale, John Hunnicutt III, Dan Magill, Tyus Butler, Dr. Goodloe Erwin, Richard Morris, W.E. Hopkins Jr., and Lamar Lewis, all of Athens. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Bernstein Funeral Home. William T. Grimes Minerva William T. Grimes, 78, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999. A native of Minerva, Mr. Grimes was a son of the late Harry D. and Carrie Shaw Grimes. He was an inspector at Ford Motor Company, retiring after 33 years of service. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4129. He was a member of First Christian Church. Services will be at 11 a.m. May 10 at First Christian Church with the Rev. Ralph Norman officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery with military services. Survivors include his wife, Pauline Kotera Grimes; a son, William Grimes, Colbert; a sister, Majel McConahey Adams, Louisville; a grandson; a granddaughter; a great-grandson and a great-granddaughter. Stein. She was a homemaker and was a member of Immanuel Ladies' Guild of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Funeral Home, Belvidere, with the Rev. A native of Greenville, S.C., Mr. Timms was a son of Mary Murphy Timms, Greenville, S.C. and the late James Fred Timms. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was employed as a sheriff's deputy for Oconee County and the Woodcraft Company, Madison. He was a Shriner, a Mason and was a member of Bishop Baptist Church. Services will be private. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include a son, J. Kelley Timms, Bishop; a sister, Nancy Owens, Charlotte, N.C.; and a niece. A native of Elberton, Mrs. Wilson was a daughter of James William and Kathryn Jackson Rainey Hyde, Elberton. She was a graduate of Elberton High School and Agnes Scott College. He received her master's degree from Georgia State University. She was employed as a mental health counselor. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fortsonia Baptist Church with the Rev.
