Story last updated at 8:34 a.m. on Wednesday, October 6, 1999 Mariano Rubio Spanish governor MADRID, Spain -- Mariano Rubio, the governor of Spain's central bank who was forced to resign over allegations he used insider information, died Monday of colon cancer. He was 68. In 1984, Rubio took over as governor of Spain's central bank under the Socialist government of then-Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez. He was forced to resign in 1992 because of allegations that he used insider information in business dealings. He spent nearly a month in prison. Although he was charged in the case, it was never brought to trial. Emil Schumacher BERLIN (AP) -- Emil Schumacher, one of postwar Germany's leading abstract expressionist artists, died Monday. He was 87. Schumacher began drawing and sketching his surroundings and family members in his youth. In 1939 he became a technical draftsman at a nearby battery-works. He resumed painting after World War II and in 1947, along with Gustav Deppe, Thomas Grochowiak, Ernst Hermanns, Heinrich Siepmann and Hans Werdehausen, he founded the group ''The Young West.'' In the early 1950s he broke with tradition and adopted a completely abstract style that became known as ''informal art,'' where the workmanship and application of paint and other materials becomes the image. His paintings hang in museums around the world, including the Guggenheim in New York and the Tate Gallery in London. Marilyn Silverstone NEW DELHI, India (AP) -- Marilyn Silverstone, a news photographer who left her career to become a Buddhist nun, died Sept. 29 at a monastery in Nepal. She was 70. Ms. Silverstone had worked for The New York Times, Life, Newsweek and the London Sunday Times. Her work included photographing the arrival of the Dalai Lama in India in 1959 and the funeral of India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. She came to India in 1959 on a four-month assignment, but stayed for 14 years, before becoming a nun and moving to Nepal. Francis Turner WASHINGTON (AP) -- Francis Turner, a one-time federal highway administrator who advised President Eisenhower on the national interstate system and was considered its chief architect, died Saturday of Cancer. He was 90. Turner, a highway engineer in Arkansas who did road surveys that built support for a system of superhighways, started working for the federal Bureau of Roads in 1929. In World War II, he worked as an engineer in Alaska to help build the Alaska Highway, and after the war he coordinated the rebuilding of damaged roads in the Philippines. Eisenhower named Turner executive secretary of the highway advisory committee in 1954, which led to recommendations for a system of interstate and defense-oriented highways that were financed by both state and federal governments. Doreen Valiente LONDON (AP) -- Doreen Valiente, self-styled witch and a central figure in the revival of paganism in Britain, died Sept. 1. She was 77. Mrs. Valiente was the author of several books, including ''The Rebirth of Witchcraft.'' Her verse and prose, such as ''The Charge of the Goddess,'' is recited by pagans all over the world. Born in London and brought up as a Christian, Mrs. Valiente claimed to have experienced psychic episodes in her youth and was a practicing clairvoyant in her teens. In 1952, a year after Britain repealed its Witchcraft Act, Mrs. Valiente was introduced to Gerald Gardner, who ran a coven practicing what he called traditional witchcraft -- a religion whose devotees worshipped the god and goddess of fertility. She was initiated as a witch in 1953 and became the coven's high priestess. Edwin Warfield III BALTIMORE (AP) -- Edwin Warfield III, former chairman and chief executive officer of The Daily Record Co. and a former state legislator, died Monday at the age of 75. Warfield represented Howard County in the state House of Delegates from 1963 until he resigned in 1970, when he was appointed adjutant general of the Maryland National Guard. He commanded National Guard troops in the early 1970s during student disturbances at the University of Maryland's College Park campus following the bombing of Cambodia by U.S. aircraft. A World War II pilot, he once was shot down while strafing a Japanese airfield and had to parachute into the Pacific Ocean, where he spent four days in a raft before being rescued by a U.S. submarine. In 1982, three years after he retired as the state adjutant general, the Air National Guard's airfield at Martin State Airport, home base of the 175th Air National Guard Wing, was named after him. Warfield's family traced its roots to the founding of the United States; his great-great-grandfather, Col. Gassaway Watkins, served in the Revolutionary War. Warfield's grandfather, Edwin Warfield Sr., was a governor of Maryland, and a successful businessman who founded The Daily Record and the Fidelity and Deposit Co. Warfield was the cousin of Wallis Warfield Simpson, whose marriage to King Edward of England cost him the throne.
