Walter Savannah Nellie Rucker Walter, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999. A native of Athens, Mrs. Walter was a daughter of the late Lamar Cobb Rucker and Nita Black Rucker and was the widow of Henry Alexander Walter. She was a graduate of the Lucy Cobb Institute, the Hannah Moore Academy, the University of Georgia and the University of Heidelberg, Germany. She had a Ph.D in natural sciences and taught at Putnam Vocational High School in Massachusetts, where she was a member of the Wood Hole Country Club. She was of the Episcopalian faith. Services will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 20, 1999 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Oconee Hill Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Nita Walter McAdams, Portland, Ore.; three sons, Henry A. Walter Jr., Richardson, Texas, Lamar Cobb Walter, Savannah, and Peter R. Walter, Northfield, Mass.; and three grandchildren. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Hunter was a son of the late Eddie and Mary Hunter. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he served as superintendent of Sunday school, president of the usher board and was a member of the deacon board. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of a masonic lodge. He served on the Northeast Georgia Planning Committee and was a member of the Action Board of Directors. He was retired from the University of Georgia. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Revs. Calvin Turner, L.T. Crawford, W. Flint and Z. Harris officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. LEADSTORIES Story last updated at 7:57 a.m. on Tuesday, December 7, 1999 Irene Withers Tyler Lavonia Mrs. Irene Withers Tyler, age 86, of the Shoal Creek Community, Lavonia, GA died Saturday, December 4, 1999 at her residence. Mrs. Tyler was born in Stephens County, GA on October 30, 1913, to the late James R. and Myrtie L. Perkins Withers. Mrs. Tyler has ben widowed by two husbands: Boyd Withworth and George Tyler, both having been from Lavonia, GA. Mrs. Tyler graduated from the Lavonia High School in 1932. She had resided in Atlanta and Decatur, GA for many years, prior to coming back to Lavonia, GA. Mrs. Tyler retired from Southern Bell after 28 years of service and at retirement was a long distance supervisor in Atlanta. She was a Life member of the Telephone Pioneers Dogwood Chapter. Mrs. Tyler has always taken an active part in the churches she had attended. She taught the youth in Sunday School at the Methodist Church in Decatur for 2 years. She was Lay Person in the Church, and sang in both Baptist and Methodist church choirs for many years. At the time of her death, Mrs. Tyler was member of the Shoal Creek Baptist Church in Lavonia, GA where she has taught Sunday School, served as past president of the Women's Missionary Union, and was a member of the ''Forever Young'' group. In addition to her church activities, Mrs. Tyler was very active in the Easter Star Order #377, Lavonia, GA having been Past Worthy Matron. She was a member of East Atlanta group #108 for twenty-six years. She had also been active in the Hartwell Senior Citizen Club. She loved animals and sports but most of all she loved God, her family, and all the people around her. Mrs. Tyler is survived by two brothers and their wives, Royce E. and Betty G. Withers, Roswell, GA, Hugh F. and Alice Withers, Dumas, Texas, and three additional sisters-in-law. Many nieces and nephews also survive. Mrs. Tyler was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Withers and Mary Lou Buffington, four brothers, Furman, Inman, Hoyt and Harold Withers. Services for Mrs. Tylers will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday December 8, 1999, at the Hamby Funeral Home Chapel, Lavonia, GA. Interment will follow at the Shoal Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Lavonia, GA. The Revs. Jack Lamb and James Williamson will officiate. The Shoal Creek Baptist Church T.E.L. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, having sung in the choir and having taught Sunday school for 22 years. She served on the board of directors for Hope Haven School for 12 years. She was a member of Methodist Women for 44 years, having served in various positions. She was elected 'Valiant Woman' by Church Women United and represented them on the board of the Athens Community Council on Aging. She was a founding member of the Advisory Council for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and was a member of The Women's Club and Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. Survivors include her husband, Dawson Mullen; a daughter, Marie Lewis, Elko; a son, G. Ritchie Mullen, Ellijay; a brother, Ralph Ritchie, Birmingham; and five grandchildren.
