Benton Winder Leora C. Benton, 89, formerly of 1248 Washington St., Jefferson, died Friday, April 9, 1999. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Benton was a daughter of the late W.T. and Jesse Cruce and was the widow of Harold Benton. She was a homemaker and was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Faith Baptist Church, with the Revs. Gerald Mitton and Eric Shelton officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson. Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Green, Alpharetta; three sons, Larry Benton and Roger Benton, both of Jefferson, and Jimmy Benton, Commerce; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Karen Davis Athens Karen Davis, of 747 Riverhill Drive, died Thursday, April 8, 1999. A native of Stephens County, Ms. Davis was a daughter of Mildred Todd Davis, Toccoa, and the late Harry Davis. Ms. Davis was project director of the Developmental Therapy-Teaching Programs at the University of Georgia from 1987-1997 and earlier was developmental therapy project director of the Rutland Center and instructor for the Developmental Therapy Institute. As project director, Ms. Davis was responsible for the funding of numerous grants through the University of Georgia programs for exceptional children, and more recently, the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. She has also served as adjunct faculty of Seattle Pacific University, Portland State University, and Central Washington University, as well as instructor at the University of Georgia. Ms. Davis was author and co-author of articles and other publications, including a book, "Developmental Therapy-Developmental Teaching" with Mary M. Wood. Ms. Davis presented or directed conferences throughout the United States and abroad. She was a member of the following professional organizations: Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Iota, Kappa Delta Epsilon, National Association for Music Therapy, Council for Children with Behavior Disorders. In 1998, she received a Significant Achievement Award for her outstanding contributions to the field of Developmental Therapy, and in 1993, accepted the American Psychiatric Association Significant Achievement Award for the Rutland Psychoeducational Services. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Ms. Davis was a leader, traveler, musician, writer, teacher, friend, and most-committed advocate of the Developmental Therapy-Teaching model. Her many friends and colleagues will miss her enthusiasm, dedication, love of the beauty of nature and devotion to all children with special needs. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jon Appleton officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. today in Carnes Creek Baptist Church cemetery, Toccoa. Fambrough Watkinsville Lindsey L. Fambrough, 81, died Thursday, April 8, 1999. A native of Oconee County, Mr. Fambrough was a son of the late Oscar and Ossie Phillips Fambrough. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Miriam Fambrough. He was a retired dairyman and was a farmer. He was a deacon and member of Antioch Christian Church where he served on the building and grounds committee. Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Antioch Christian Church, with the Rev. A native of Woodstock, Mr. Hendon was a son of the late Alvin and Myrtle Hendon and was the widower of Ruby T. Hendon. He was retired from management at Colonial Poultry, now Gold Kist, and was a member of First United Methodist Church. He was a former grandmaster of Acworth Masonic Lodge. Jackson, 79, died Thursday, April 8, 1999. Mr. Jackson was a veteran of World War II, a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps, pilot, Burma-India Campaign. He was owner of Jackson Ready Mixed Concrete Inc. of Athens, Commerce and Winder. He was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Barrow and previous Board of Director member of Bank South. He was a member of Winder Hospital Board Authority and Winder Board of Education. He served on the past Board of Directors of the Athens Country Club and was deacon and elder of First Christian Church, Winder. He served on the Board of Directors of the Christian College of Georgia, and was a board member of Hearland of Campbell-Stone, developing a new retirement community in Barrow County. He had served on the regional board of the Christian Church of Georgia and was a past president of the Georgia Association of Georgia Concrete Companies. He was a member of the Loyal Men's Sunday school class of the First Christian Church of Winder, attended Georgia Institute of Technology, and was on the board of the Winder Chamber of Commerce. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church, with the Rev. John Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
