Irene Snow Hawks, 86, died Thursday, July 8, 1999. A native of Carroll County, Mrs. Hawks was a daughter of the late Wilburn and Dellie Stewart Snow and was the widow of Carlie Columbus Hawks. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home, Galax, Va. with the Rev. Harris Easter officiating. Burial will be in Stockner Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Celeada Cochran, Athens; two sons, Saford Hawks and Kenneth Hawks, both of Asheboro, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Margaret Hemphill Norcross Margaret Anne Hemphill, 66, died Thursday, July 8, 1999. A native of Franklin County, Ms. Hemphill was a daughter of the late Charlie and Almedia Loden Hemphill. She was a graduate of Franklin County High School, attended Young Harris College and Washington Hospital Center School of Nursing and graduated from Crawford W. Long School of Nursing. She was employed by the FBI in Washington, D.C., for a number of years. After receiving her nursing degree she was on staff at Crawford W. Long Hospital for more than 30 years, where she was head nurse in the emergency room, established an oncology unit at the hospital and later was manager of the outpatient clinic. She volunteered extensively and served the American Cancer Society. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Sunshine United Methodist Church with the Revs. Ryan Seawright and Leo Burgess officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A memorial service will be later at Crawford W. Long Hospital, Atlanta. Survivors include three sisters, Emily Burgess, Fayetteville, Julia Faye Kinney, Atlanta, and Jonell Kirby, Seneca, S.C.; two brothers, Frank Hemphill, Clarkesville, and Fred Hemphill, Gillsville; nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Charles Walters, Davis Walters, Roger Bush, Ted Burgess, John Kinney and Jim Dodd. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today at Acree-Davis Funeral Home, Toccoa. Elwood Herring Indianapolis, Ind. Elwood Franklin Herring, 76, of 409 W. Mount Court, formerly of Maxeys, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999. A native of Athens, Mr. Herring was a son of the late Emory L. and Ida Estelle Saye Herring. He was a retired electrician and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, Disabled American Veterans No. 48, American Legion in Lexington and Gideons International. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church, Stephens, with the Revs. James Ash and Douglas Butts officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Geneva Lampkin Herring; three daughters, Belinda Crowley, Indianapolis, Carol Hering, Winterville, and Wendy Adams, Beaver Creek, Ohio; a sister, Myrtle Harris, Athens; and four grandchildren. Maggie Lillie Pressley Elberton Maggie Lillie Pressley of 336 Williams St. died Thursday, July 8, 1999. A native of Elberton, Mrs. Pressley was a daughter of the late Frank H. and Louisa Raiford Wilker. She was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Eastern Star No. 5 and the 8th District Missionary Convention. She was President of Senior Missionary Board and Senior Usher Board. She was a Ward III Captain and was President of Elbert County Widow's Union for over 40 years. She was employed by Mrs. Margaret Rucker for over 70 years. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. H.T. Butler Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Pineview Cemetery. Rush Burton Rogers Lavonia Rush Burton Rogers, 55, of Vickery Street died Thursday, July 8, 1999. A native of Gainesville, Mr. Rogers was a son of the late Joseph Ross and Eloise Burton Rogers. He retired as a supervisor of a road crew from the State Highway Department. He was of the Methodist faith and served in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include a daughter, Tora Hare, Carnesville; a sister, Roslyn Rogers Ogletree, Greenville, S.C.; a niece and a nephew. A native of Banks County, Mrs. Suggs was a daughter of the late Robert and Minnie Lee Patterson Sailors and was the widow of Guy Suggs. She was a longtime resident of Barrow County and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, where she attended the Mother's Sunday School Class. She was a retired seamstress from Cherokee Manufacturing Co. of Winder. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Carter Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Deaton officiating. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens. A lifelong resident of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Thaxton was a daughter of the late Johns W. and Emily Callie Appling Cunningham and was the widow of Irvin A. Thaxton. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Emily T. Hanson, and a son, William D. Thaxton. She was the oldest member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Lord & Stephens Oglethorpe Chapel Funeral Home with the Revs. Linda Jones and Curtis Parker officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
