Banks, 87, of 4171 Harmony Church Road, died Sunday, May 9, 1999. A native of Banks County, Mr. Banks was a son of the late J. Willie and Virgie Lewallen Banks. He was a retired carpenter and was a member of Webbs Creek Baptist Church and Homer American Legion Post 215. He was a U.S. merchant marine veteran of World War II. Johnson Bogart Greene Flournoy Johnson, 94, of 1660 Jennings Mill Road, died Saturday, May 8, 1999. A native of Jasper County, Mr. Johnson was a son of the late Greene Flournoy Johnson Sr., reputed to be the top trial lawyer in Georgia earlier this century, and Mary Howard Smith. He was a direct descendant of Revolutionary War Major-General Elijah Clarke, for whom Clarke County is named, and of the Rev. Daniel Marshall, who founded the first Baptist church in Georgia in 1772. He was a 1925 graduate of the University of Georgia, received his master's in business administration from Harvard University in 1928, and received his law degree from St. John's University in 1937. He taught finance from 1928-1929 at the UGA School of Commerce and was among the first alumni to receive the award for merit for outstanding business service from the UGA's Business School in 1963. He served on the Board of the UGA Foundation for many years and worked for the Guaranty Trust Co. of New York from 1929-1943 in the Corporate Trust Department. He then joined the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. where, as vice president of finance until his retirement in 1969, he directed the company's large investment portfolio. He served on the board of the National Council of Alcoholism from 1954-1965. At a time when alcoholism bore a heavy social stigma and was not widely regarded as a disease, he was instrumental in raising badly needed funds for the NCA from law firms. He also worked tirelessly to persuade businesses to accept alcoholism as a disease and to provide treatment for employees. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Survivors include his wife, Caroline Lovell Johnson; a daughter, Caroline Pyott, Athens; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Kilpatrick and Florence Greenway Kilpatrick. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and later retired from Delta Airlines. He was a member and deacon of Bishop Baptist Church. He was Past Master of the Tucker Masonic Lodge and the Amity Masonic Lodge, Watkinsville. A native of Stephens County, Miss Land was a daughter of Ruth Leverette and the late William "Bill" V. Land. She was a veteran of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and was a certified registered nurse and employee of Stephens County Hospital for 10 years. Charles Levin Middlebrooks Jr.Athens Charles Levin Middlebrooks, Jr., 77, of 134 West Lake Court in Athens, died Monday, May 10, 1999. Born in Roswell, Georgia, the Reverend Mr. Middlebrooks, Jr., was the son of the late Charles Levin Middlebrooks, Sr., and Mary Randall Middlebrooks. He was a retired United Methodist minister of the North Georgia Conference. His last appointment was as the District Superintendent of the Athens-Elberton District, retiring from that post in 1986. Before that his appointments were pastor of several United Methodist congregations in North Georgia, including Crawfordville, Oconee Street in Athens, South Broad in Rome, Stewart Avenue and Druid Hills in Atlanta, Roswell First, Milledgeville First, and LaGrange First, and District Superintendent of the Dalton District. The Reverend Mr. Middlebrooks was a graduate of Emory University and Candler School of Theology. While in college and seminary, Mr. Middlebrooks was a member of the Emory Glee Club, serving as president. Later he was a member of the repertory company of the Atlanta Light Opera Company. He was, at various times during his career, the Conference Song Leader and Chair of the Commission on Worship for both the North Georgia Conference and the Southeastern Jurisdiction. Recently he has served on the Animal Care and Use Committee of the University of Georgia, and the Advisory Board of Lanier Gardens - Talmage Terrace in Athens. His Memorial Service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Athens on Wednesday, May 12, at 2:00 P.M. The ministers will be the Reverend Mr. Thomas Camp and the Reverend Dr. William Britt.
