LEADSTORIES Story last updated at 8:56 a.m. on Thursday, November 11, 1999 Lois K. Miller Athens ATHENS, Ga. Dr. Lois K. Miller, a University of Georgia scientist who was one of the world's leading experts on the use of insect viruses for controlling agricultural pests, died in Athens Nov. 9 following a long illness. Dr. Miller, 54, was Distinguished Research Professor of genetics and entomology at UGA and one of nine active or retired UGA faculty members elected to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honors a scientist can attain. Dr. Miller, who joined the UGA faculty in 1986, conducted ground-breaking research on the molecular genetics of insect viruses. Her work had an important impact on many areas of basic and applied biology. One result of her research was development of genetically improved viruses for pesticides that control harmful pests but have minimal effects on beneficial insect species. She was also noted for research on a biological process known as programmed cell death, which deals with why cells die in animals and plants. Dr. Miller and her students discovered two classes of genes that could help inhibit programmed cell death, which has been implicated in the development of many human diseases including cancer and AIDS. Her research was supported by several million dollars in grants from such agencies as the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as well as more than $1.2 million in research contracts from several multinational corporations. She held a number of patents for her work. A native of Lebanon, Pa., Dr. Miller received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Upsala College and a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin. She held postdoctoral fellowships with the American Cancer Society at the California Institute of Technology, and the National Institutes of Health at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London, England. She was on the faculty of the University of Idaho before coming to UGA. She was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1997. She was also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a fellow of the American Society of Microbiology, and was a charter member of the American Society of Virology. The recipient of UGA's Lamar Dodd Award for Outstanding Research in 1996, Dr. Miller also received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, a Merit Award from the National Institutes of Health and the Chiron Biotechnology Research Award from the American Society of Microbiology. She was author of some 150 articles in professional journals and made presentations at scores of scientific seminars and programs throughout the world. She was on the editorial boards of several major professional publications and was co-author of a laboratory manual and editor of other scientific volumes. Dr. Miller is survived by her husband, Karl Espelie, of Athens; a daughter, Erin Espelie, a student at Cornell University; her mother, Naomi Miller, Harrisburg, Pa.; a sister, Carole Yeager, Nescopeck, Pa.; and a brother, Paul Miller, Winneconne, Wis. The body has been cremated and no funeral services will be held. Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, East, is in charge of arrangements.
