Bell Bishop Billy B. Bell, 68, of 1161 Hardigree Bell Road died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999. A native of Oconee County, Mr. Bell was a son of the late Erskine and Goalmer Ward Bell. He was a street supervisor with the city of Watkinsville for eight years and was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in Guam. He was of the Baptist faith. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bernstein Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Palmer officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Edith A. Bell; a sister, Barbara B. Dooley, Atlanta; three nieces; seven nephews; two great-nieces; and three great-nephews. Bowen Sr. Commerce James Thomas Bowen Sr., 63, of Willow B. Homes died Monday, Jan. 1, 1999. A native of Clarke County, Mr. Bowen was a son of the late William Vernon Bowen Sr. and Fannie Mae Massey Bowen and the widower of Margie Ellen Milton Bowen. He was a retired employee of Gold Kist Feed Mill and was a member of Commerce Church of God. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Community Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Webber officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ellen Towe, Colbert; three sons, James T. Bowen Jr., Danny Milton Bowen, both of Commerce, Joseph Roger Bowen, Carnesville; seven sisters, Juanita Swain, Homer, Marie Canady, Sylvania, Evelyn Meadows, Athens, Ethel Brock, Danielsville, Francis Trotter, Royston, Margaret Kitchens, Commerce, and Dolly Dalton, Danielsville; three brothers, Frank Bowen, Greenville, S.C., Jack Bowen, Hull, and Cole Bowen, Kannapolis, N.C.; six grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Fay Agnew Breedlove Atlanta Fay Agnew Breedlove, 89, of 5411 Northland Drive formerly of Athens, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999. Mrs. Breedlove was born June 18, 1910 in Franklin County, and was a daughter of the late James F. and Emma S. Agnew, Carnesville. She was a graduate of Franklin County High School and attended the Asheville State Teacher's College, N.C. She was retired from St. Mary's Hospital and was active in her community serving as volunteer in the St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary, the Red Cross and at the Heritage Nursing Home. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, Athens, for more than 30 years and served in numerous roles in her church. Memorial services were Monday at St. James United Methodist Church, 111 W. Lake Drive, Athens. Funeral services were Monday at Hamby Funeral Home, Lavonia, with the Rev. Kent Reynolds officiating. Dickie Athens Margaret McKenzie Dickie, 63, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999. A native of Bennington, Vt., Mrs. Dickie was a daughter of Dorothy Sweet Dickie and the late Henry Hodgeson Dickie, Bennington, Vt., Dr. Dickie received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Middlebury College and her Ph.D. in English from Brown University. From 1966 to 1987, she was a professor of English at the University of Illinois, Urbana, where she served as department chair from 1983 to 1987. One of the first women at the University of Georgia to hold an endowed chair, she was the Helen S. Lanier Distinguished Professor of English at UGA from 1987 until her retirement in 1998, when she was named emeritus professor of English. She was the author of six scholarly books on American poetry and was the editor of one collection of critical essays. She served as a trustee of the University of Georgia Foundation. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a winner of the Middlebury College Alumni Association Achievement Award, a Fulbright Distinguished Lecturer in Bangkok, Thailand, and the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. She recently received the first Women's Studies Faculty Award at the University of Georgia. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. Eddie Ard officiating. Hunter Griffith Jefferson Annie Mae Hunter Griffith, 93, of Athens Highway died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Griffith was a daughter of the late William Stephen Hunter and Illa Harrison and was the widow of Roy Sylvester Griffith. She was a seamstress, a homemaker and a very active member of First United Methodist Church. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Jackson Funeral Home with the Rev. Carol Scroggs officiating. She was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church where she served as secretary and former Sunday school teacher. She was a member of the Rainbow Club and was the author of "History of Millbrook Baptist Church." Nelson Manley Carnesville Nelson Jesse Manley, 65, of 111 Gainesville St. died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999. Mr. Manley was a son of the late Jesse Harrison Manley and Annie Laura Ussery Manley. He was a retired welder and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church. He was a retired self-employed brick mason with 45 years of service, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a member of AARP.
