Hughes Lincolnton Blair Clarence Hughes, 55, of 1570 Broad River Scenic Drive died Monday, July 12, 1999. A native of York, Pa., Mr. Hughes was a son of the late William and Gladys Tressel Hughes. He was owner and operator of Hughes Homes Improvements Co. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served in Vietnam. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Survivors include his wife, Tina Sanders Hughes; three daughters, Tara Smiley, York, Felicia Hughes and Shelia Hughes, both of Lincolnton; a son, Cash Hughes, Lincolnton; four sisters, Rae Nessmith, Trenton, Fla., Mae Brown, Dot Salisbury and Jean Desaields, all of York; three brothers, Lee Hughes, Fredricksburh, Va., Dale and Scott Hughes, both of York; and five grandchildren. Berry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Dub Maxwell Toccoa W.C. "Dub" Maxwell, 90, of 14 N. Big A Road died Tuesday, July 13, 1999. A native of Stephens County, Mr. Maxwell was a son of the late Silas A. and Coralee Bailey Maxwell and was the widower of Edith Black Maxwell. He was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church and was owner and operator of Maxwell Shoe Shop in Toccoa. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Acree-Davis Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Lamb officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery, Clarkesville. Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn M. Wheeler, Douglasville; two sisters, Selma Abernatahy, Deltona, Fla., and Jewel Stribling, Cary, N.C.; a brother, Loye Maxwell, Haines City, Fla.; a grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 106 Roselane, Toccoa 30577. Mabell Pierce Comer Mabell Pierce, 82, died Wednesday, July 14, 1999. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Pierce was a daughter of the late Ott and Lillie Graham Booth and was the widower of Otha Pierce. She was preceded in death by a son, Edward Pierce. She was a homemaker and was a member of Glade Baptist Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pruitte Funeral Home with the Rev. John Griffin officiating. Burial will be in Collier Baptist Church cemetery. Survivors include four sons, Albert Pierce, Joe W. Pierce, Cecil A. Pierce and Donald Ray Pierce, all of Carlton; three sisters, Betty McCannon, Geneva Young and Cora Taylor, all of Comer; a brother, James Booth, Comer; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Jewell Rice Dewy Rose Jewell Elizabeth Craft Rice, 83, of 880 Coldwater Creek Road died Wednesday, July 14, 1999. A native of Hart County, Mrs. Rice was a daughter of the late Albert J. and Katherine Gunnells Craft and was the widow of Archie J. Rice. She was a retired beautician and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church, where she was pianist for 50 years, treasurer of the church, and was a member of United Methodist Women's Club. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethesda United Methodist Church with the Rev. Al Key officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Donna Jordan, Hartwell; a son, Billy Rice, Indianapolis, Ind.; a sister, Lois Bobo, Anderson, S.C.; two brothers, Pat Craft, Elberton, and Toby Craft, Maggie Valley, N.C.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Virgil Lee "Virt" Smith, 71, died Saturday, July 10, 1999. A native of Leland, Miss., Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Ollie Holmes and Ellis "Jack" Ivory and was the widower of Samuel Dean Smith. She was educated in the Leland School System. She was a former member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Leland, and was a member of North Star Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Mother's Board. Services were held in Michigan. Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Blount, Athens, and Cheryl Brock, Flint, Mich.; three sons, Sam Smith Jr., Jimmie Smith and Frederick Smith, all of Flint; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Stover was a daughter of the late James and Alma Pruett Morris and was the widow of Richard D. Stover. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nina Kay Stover. She retired as a seamstress from Empire Manufacturing. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Gordon Thornton officiating. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Survivors include a daughter, Wanda Stover, Winder; a brother, H.C. Morris, Bethlehem; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Hoyt Alexander Teasley Elberton Hoyt Alexander Teasley, 74, of 52 Arnold St. died Sunday, July 11, 1999. A native of Hart County, Mr. Teasley was a son of the late Irene Teasley Upshaw. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Maple Spring Baptist Church, Dewy Rose, with the Revs. Alvin Scott and McArthur Allen officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include five daughters, Irene Teasley Martin, Deborah Teasley Miles, Andrea Tealsey Jackson, Tramaine Lee and Karla White, all of Atlanta; two sons, Bruce Teasley and Hoyt Keith Teasley, both of Atlanta; and 16 grandchildren. The family is at the residence. McKinney-Neal Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements. David West Athens David Eugene West, 48, of 426 Huntington Road died Monday, July 12, 1999. A native of Memphis, Tenn. and a former resident of Rex, Mr. West was a son of Raymond Eugene West or Chula Vista, Calif. and Allie Taylor West of San Diego, Calif. He was a truck driver and was a private airplane pilot. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hopewell Presbyterian Church cemetery with the Rev. Joe Renfro officiating. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include a son, Glen Timothy West, Martin; two sisters, Elaine Bellamy, St. Louis, Mo., and Carolyn Horlor, Enumclaw, Wash.; two brothers, Richard West, Spring Valley, Calif., and Mike West, San Diego; stepmother, Helen West, Chula Vista.
