Mrs. Brooks was a daughter of Richard and Mary Fitzgerald, Fairfax, Va. She was a member of Collins Hill Baptist Church and worked as a research coordinator with the University of Georgia. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Collins Hill Baptist Church, Lawrenceville, with the Revs. Dan Huff and Billy Driskell officiating. Burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery, Lawrenceville. Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Jeff Brooks; two brothers, David Fitzgerald, Fairfax, Va., and Tim Fitzgerald, Charlottesville, Va.; a sister-in-law, Jennifer Fitzgerald, Charlottesville, Va.; mother- and stepfather-in-law, Joyce and Newton Franklin, Lawrenceville; brother- and sister-in-law, Joey and Connie Brooks, Dacula; a niece, Kristen Brooks; and a nephew, Alex Brooks. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. today and Tuesday at the Tom M. Wages Funeral Home, Lawrenceville. Nan Cooke Carpenter Thomasville Nan Cooke Carpenter, 86, died Friday, May 14, 1999, at Camellia Gardens Life Care Home, Thomasville, after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her sister, Kathleen Carpenter Wine of Thomasville, and a brother, Charles Richard Carpenter of Newport News, Va., a nephew, F. Alexander Gould of Yorktown, Va., and a niece, Mary Carpenter Gould Coulbourn of Richmond, Va. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Haley Carpenter. She was a daughter of the late Charles R. Carpenter and Nan Rosa Cooke Carpenter. In 1930 she graduated from Maury High School, Norfolk, Va., as valedictorian. At Hollins College, Dr. Carpenter graduated with honors in 1934 with a BA in music. Later she received her MA in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received her doctorate in musicology from Yale University in 1948. Dr. Carpenter was a professor of English at the University of Montana and a Professor of Fine Arts at Syracuse University. She spent a year at Cambridge University on a Ford Foundation Fellowship and a year at the Huntington Library in Los Angeles on a fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies. In 1967, Dr. Carpenter joined the faculty at the University of Georgia as a Professor of English, later becoming the Chairman of the Comparative Literature Department. She held this position until her retirement in 1980 as Professor Emeritus. Her career was outstanding even though she was severely handicapped by polio at age 5. She published four books and numerous articles and papers relating to music and literature. She received many honors including Phi Beta Kappa, Directory of American Scholars, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in the Humanities, International Who's Who, and others. She was much beloved by her students and associates and was greatly admired and respected for her many accomplishments, her brilliant intellect and dedication to her profession. A private memorial service will be held in Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Nan Cooke Carpenter Scholarship, Hollins University, P.O. Box 9626, Roanoke, VA 24020-9983, or a favorite charity. Allen & Allen Funeral Home, Thomasville, is in charge of the arrangements. Martha Evelyn Grant Commerce Martha Evelyn Grant, 64, of 200 Bolton Road, died Saturday, May 15, 1999. A native of Commerce, Mrs. Grant was a daughter of the late Donald and Evelyn Nix Wright. She was a homemaker. Services will be at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at Ivie Funeral Home Inc., Commerce, with the Rev. Tim Strickland officiating. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Park, Commerce. Survivors include a son, Donald Grant, Ocala, Fla.; a daughter, Dawn Thompson, Hoschton; a sister, Nancy Miles, Douglasville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Dorothy Hart Laurel Hill, Fla. Dorothy Wright Hart, 91, died Friday, May 14, 1999. A native of Newberry, S.C., and formerly of Tucker, Mrs. Hart was a daughter of the late James and Bernice Smith Wright and was the widow of William Hart. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, Grayson. Burial will be in Oconee Hill Cemetery. Survivors include a son, Robert S. Hart, Munster, Ind.; a daughter, Barbara J. Maples, Laurel Hill, Fla.; a sister, Josephine Herring, Athens; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, is in charge of the arrangements. Harrison Holloway Toccoa Harrison Holloway, 71, of Route 2, Stonewall Court, died Sunday, May 16, 1999. A native of Lumpkin County, Mr. Holloway was a son of the late William and Nancy Waters Holloway. He had resided in Toccoa for 30 years, was retired from the maintenance department of Harden Shows, and was of the Holiness faith. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Acree-Davis Funeral Home, Toccoa, with the Rev. Dennis Rafala officiating. Burial will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens, Toccoa. Survivors include his wife, Jessie Meeks Holloway; a son, Larry Holloway, Gainesville; two daughters, Wanda Allison, Clermont, and Margie Smith, Gainesville; a stepson, James Nations, Toccoa; a brother, Oliver Holloway, Gainesville; and a number of grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Tim Richardson, Ronald Addison, Ernest Hix, Marvin Gowell, Marvin Brown, and DeWitt Nations. Martin Elberton Alice Frances Dunn Martin, 66, formerly of 128 Oak Drive, died Saturday, May 15, 1999. A native of Elbert County, Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late Monroe Henry Sr. and Edith Mae Dickerson Dunn and was the widow of Jim Joe Martin. She was a homemaker and a member of Dewy Rose Baptist Church. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. today at the Hicks Funeral Home, Elberton, with the Rev. David McConnell officiating. Burial will be in the Carlton City Cemetery. Survivors include two sons, Chuck Martin, Elberton, and Jimmy Martin, Jacksonville, Ark.; a daughter, Marie Guyton, Killen, Ala.; two sisters, Iris D. Brown, Elberton, and Cathrine Whitworth, Lilburn; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Pallbearers will be Monroe Dunn III, Dennis Johnson, Roger Guyton, Ray Singleton Jr., Gary Whitworth, and Steven Singleton. The family is at the residence. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Calvin O. Richey Commerce Calvin O. Richey, 85, of 2359 Ila Road, died Saturday, May 15, 1999. A native of Wilcox County, Mr. Richey was a son of the late Gus and Sally Richey. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Blacks Creek Baptist Church. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. today at Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Lee Hunter and Curtis Greene officiating. Burial will be in Blacks Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
