A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Shelnut was a daughter of the late W.R. Fortson and Ethel Cauthers Fortson and was the widow of Oliver Shelnut. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hull Baptist Church with the Revs. Randy Crowe and Virgil Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Hull Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Brewer and Linda Cox, both of Athens; a son, Ray Shelnut, Athens; two sisters, Margaret Farmer, Arden, N.C., and Frances Ross, Kannapolis, N.C.; two brothers, Theron Fortson, Athens, and Fred Fortson, Concord, N.C.; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A native of Madison County, Mr. Fitzpatrick was a son of the late Reuben Thomas and Ada Burroughs Fitzpatrick. He was retired from the Madison County Board of Education. She was retired from Bell Telephone Co. as an assistant communications engineer and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Toccoa. She was a member of the Just Friends Sunday School class, the Telephone Pioneers of America, The Currahee Squares and the Soque Square Dance Club. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shirley Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Henry Fields and Joe Nicholson officiating. Survivors include two sisters, Milam Kocica, Hollywood, and Mary Giles, Asheville, N.C.; three brothers, Lloyd Nicholson, Columbiana, Ala., Judson Nicholson, Tallulah Falls, and Wayne Nicholson, Montgomery, Ala.; nieces and nephews.
