Born in Oconee County, she was a daughter of the late James Asa and Eva Aycock Downs. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Athens, where she served on the Administrative Board and was a member of the F.U.M. Altar Guild. She served on the Board of Trustees of the YWCO. She was a charter member of the Bobbin Mill Garden Club and a member of the African Violet Society. She was a member of the Athens Regional Hospital Auxiliary and a Red Cross Volunteer and she also served as a volunteer at the State Botanical Gardens. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 21, 1999, at the First United Methodist Church Chapel, Athens. Survivors include a brother, Lamar Downs; a sister, Etta Mae Hamilton; two daughters, Mimi Christian, Watkinsville, and Babs Christian May, Murphy, N.C.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
