LEADSTORIES Story last updated at 9:04 a.m. on Friday, October 22, 1999 Dr. Albert Byron Callaway Athens Dr. Albert Byron Callaway, 88, of 120 Maple Lane, died Wednesday, Oct. 20th, after an extended illness. Born on July 9, 1911 in Lawton, Oklahoma and raised in Buffalo, Missouri, he was the son of Albert Benton Callaway and Alice Weatherly Callaway. He received his bachelor's degree in education from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. He earned a master's degree and his doctorate from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps for 30 months, while stationed in the South Pacific. He taught at Westminster College in Foulton, Missouri; University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri; Normal University in Normal, Illinois; Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama; University of Maine in Bangor, Maine; and the University of Georgia, first for four years in the 1950s. In 1963, he returned to Athens to serve as director of the Reading Clinic in the Reading Department of the School of Education. He served in that position until his retirement in 1982. After his retirement, he remained active in the Athens Area Retired Teachers Association and in a number of organizations, including the Salvation Army's Christmas volunteer program, Friends of the Library Gift Shop, the Callaway Family Association, and the Fifth Air Force 8th Fighter Group Veterans Association. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 60 years and was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1952. He is survived by his wife, Halie; daughter Dr. Cindy Callaway of Lawrenceville; son Cal, daughter-in-law Catherine, granddaughter Cali, and grandson Cash of Alpharetta.
