Anderson Rayle Jimmy L. Anderson, 75, of 1098 Philomath Road, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999. A native of Wilkes County, Mr. Anderson was a son of the late Henry and Ruby Anderson. He was a retired janitor and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tommy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mary Anderson; three daughters, Catherine Asbasi, Md.; Linda Stevens, Hawaii, and Margaret Lewis, Rayle; two sisters, Mamie Minor and Henreitte Butler, both of Atlanta; and 10 grandchildren. Davenport McLendon Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements. James W. Barrett Commerce James W. Barrett, 79, of 430 Williford St. died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999. A native of Hart County, Mr. Barrett was a son of the late Mamie Hart Barrett and Charlie Barrett. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Burdette. He was retired from Harmony Grove Mill and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Little Country Church. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Little-Ward Funeral Home, with the Revs. Jimmy Owensby, Milton Burdette and John Barrett officiating. Burial will be in Grey Hill Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Ivola Peck Barrett; four daughters, Jimie Lynne Cassai, Buford, Rhonda Coffee, St. Petersburg, Fla., Jennifer Collins and Shirley Stephenson, both of Commerce; two sons, Tony Martin and Tommy Tanner, both of Commerce; a brother, Amory Barrett, Winder; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. John Bruce Athens John Hancock Bruce, of 143 Chinquapin Way, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999. A native of Fayetteville, Tenn., Mr. Bruce was a son of Merlin Knox and Johnetta Hancock Bruce and was the widower of Ruth Hannah Bruce. He attended the University of Tennessee, was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University. He was retired from DuPont, having worked in Buffalo, N.Y., Martinsville, Va., and Athens. He was a member of St. Gregory The Great Episcopal Church and was a member of The Brotherhood of St. Andrew. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Gregory The Great Episcopal Church, with the Reverend Porter Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Cotton Jefferson Jerry Lamar Cotton, 62, of 287 Peachtree Road, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999. A native of Banks County, Mr. Cotton was a son of the late Clara Belle Odell Cotton and Pledger Cotton. The family is at the residence. Ludelle Lowe Winterville Ludelle Lowe, 85, of 84 Van Lane, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999. A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Lowe was a daughter of the late James Earl and Lillie Mae Clark Carter and was the widow of M.V. Lowe. She was preceded in death by two sons, Horace Lowe and Pat Lowe. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Corinth Baptist Church, with the Revs. Clifton Barrett, Richard McFall and Lee Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Smith Athens Eloise Beckwith Smith, 78, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999. A native of Ada, Ohio, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Wightman S. and Lessie Trammell Beckwith and was the widow of M. Reginald Smith. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for 72 years. She graduated from Athens High School and received her B.F.A., M.A. and Ed.S. from the University of Georgia. She was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Iota and a charter member of the Athens Choral Society. She taught math in Clarke County schools for 14 years and worked for the Athens Community Council on Aging, Home Delivered Meals Program until the spring of 1998. Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Ellen Smith Bryant, Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; two sons, Reginald B. Smith, Athens, and Laurin J. Smith, Brooklyn, N.Y.; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. He was a retired manager of the Athens City Bus Line and was a member of Rocky Creek Baptist Church. He later moved back to S.C. and opened his own business.
