He was born in 1906 in Patterson, New Jersey and was the son of the late J. M. Campbell and Bertha Courtright Campbell. He grew up in Bradford County Pennsylvania and attended Mansfield State Normal School, the University of Colorado and obtained his Ph.D. in plant pathology from Pennsylvania State College. He entered the field of forest disease research with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1936. In 1942 he was appointed Senior Pathologist and assigned to the Guayule Project in Salinas, California. From 1946 until 1953 he was in charge of the Forest Disease Research laboratory of the Bureau of Plant Industry at the University of Georgia. Here began a long and productive association with the University of Georgia Forestry School and the Department of Plant Pathology. From 1955 to 1961 he was the Research Center Leader at the South East Forest Experiment Station and the recipient of the Superior Service Award from the U.S Department of Agriculture. From 1961 to 1963 he was the Pathologist-in-Charge of the Forest Service Biological Lab at the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina. In 1963 he moved back to Athens and was director of the Forest Service Laboratory until his retirement in 1971. From 1971 until 1980 he taught plant pathology at the University of Georgia. In 1981 he was inducted into the Georgia Forestry Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Ebert Campbell; three children, William Andrew Campbell, Jr. of Jackson, Ga., Dr. George Ebert Campbell of Richmond, Kentucky and Kathleen Lois Spencer of Athens; seven grandchildIen, George Ebert Campbell, Jr. of Louisville, Kentucky, Andrew Campbell of High Bridge, Kentucky, Christopher Campbell of Athens, Holly Campbell of Lithonia, Todd Campbell of Bardstown, Kentucky, Meg Spencer and Jim Spencer of Athens; and one great-grandchild, Terrence Mitchell, Jr. Graveside Services will be held at 11 am on Thursday at Evergreen Memorial Park with Dr. Joe Berry officiating. Born Nov. 17, 1909 in Lynchburg, Va., he was a son of the late Nancy and John Hancock of Atlanta. Jack attended Boys High in Atlanta where he was cadet Major in the ROTC unit. He attended Emory University where he was a Chi Phi, and received his degree from Ga. State College in Atlanta. He joined Clark Thread Co. in Newark, N.J. in the 1930's and was later sent to Toccoa to set up machinery for the North Georgia Processing Co. He was named Superintendent of finishing in 1941 and retired as Mill Manager of the L.P. Greer Plant in 1974 after 43 years with Coats and Clark. Jack was very involved in church civic and community affairs. He was a charter member and past president of the Toccoa Rotary Club and was named Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary. After he retired, Jack became involved with the Literary Volunteers of America as a tutor, treasurer and member of the board of directors. He was very active at the St. Matthias Episcopal Church where he served as Senior Warden. He was recognized by the Toccoa-Stephens Jaycees as Boss of the Year in 1968, was president of the local Red Cross Chapter, the Stephens Youth Service Council and the Toccoa Country Club. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Laura Tyler Hancock and by his second wife, Rena Chandler Chambers. Survivors include two sons, John (Tom) Hancock, III of Greenville, SC, Tyler W. Hancock of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Alda Weaver of Seattle, WA; three granddaughters, Kristen, Tiffany and Laura; three step-daughters, Rena Mathisen and Elizabeth Chambers, both of Atlanta, and Bunny Porter, Screven.
