Peterson Athens Gorden H. Peterson, age 90, of Athens, Georgia died Wednesday, November 17, 1999. Mr. Peterson was born in St. Paul, Minnesota to Augusta and John Peterson, who was a native of Stockholm, Sweden. Mr. Peterson was a noted high school hockey and football player who played hockey in the St. Paul industrial leagues until he was in his mid 30's. He was a member of the St. Paul Rowing Club and participated in regattas throughout the upper Midwest and Canada. Mr. Peterson, who lived in several cities in the Midwest, spent his career in the insurance industry, primarily with the Ohio Casualty group where his last position was manager of the downstate Illinois branch in Springfield, Illinois. In 1974, he and his wife retired to Athens, Georgia where he was an active member of Beech Haven Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Mary T. Peterson, and by four brothers. He is survived by two sons and their families, Jerry and Molly Peterson, and their children Dorothy, Nancy, and Hill, Atlanta, Georgia, and Dan and Hillary Peterson, and their children Lauren and Michael, Prescott, Arizona, by his brother Merrill F. Peterson, St. Paul, Minnesota, and by numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 12, 1999 at Beech Haven Baptist Church. A native of Fulton County, Mr. Walters was a son of the late Allen Jackson and Hattie Mae Pulliam Walters and was the widower of Charlotte Hemphill Walters. He was a graduate of Eastanollee High School and Oglethorpe University, where he played on the varsity football team. He taught school at Union Elementary School and taught veterans of World War II in trade school. He was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he worked for 30 years in Soil and Water Conservation. He was a member of Sunshine United Methodist Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher and superintendent, Chairman of Administrative Church Council and Trustee. He was a member of Grove Masonic Lodge and was a charge member and First Worthy Patron of Red Hill Chapter of Eastern Star. He has served on Flintsville Election and was a member of Franklin County Board of Education and Resource Conservation and Development Council. He was former chairman of Franklin County Democratic Party and was former Justice of Peace in the Flintsville District of Franklin County. Mr. Cunningham was a son of the late George J. Cunningham and the late Maggie Adams Cunningham. He was a native of Lexington, Ga. but spent most of his life in Athens. He was a graduate of Meson Academy and served in World War II in the Merchant Marines as chief warrant officer. He was a Mason at Lexington Lodge No. 158 and was the founder and owner of John M. Cunningham Men's Wear Inc. for 22 years. After his retirement he worked part time for Dick Ferguson's Men's Clothing. He was a past member of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and served as president of Beechwood Merchant's Association. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church for 42 years, where he served on many committees and was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Geraldine ''Deanie'' Kesler Cunningham; two daughters, Pam Cunningham Hendee and son-in-law Armand E. Hendee III, Atlanta, Ga. and Tami Cunningham Kellogg and son-in-law James W.
