A native of Athens, Mrs. Autry was a daughter of the late Deloe Agnew and Claudia Willingham Williams and was the widow of Grover Charles Autry. She was a homemaker and was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church and the Women's Bible Class. Services were Friday at Bernstein Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Ricketts officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include a daughter, Martha A. Coppage, Athens; a son, Jimmy C. Autry Sr., Arnoldsville; two sisters, Jennie Ree Dixon and Willie Saye Maxey, both of Athens; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. A native of Hart County, Mrs. Elrod was a daughter of the late Calhoun and Leona Cook Banister and was the widow of Clate Banister. She was retired from Hartwell Mills as a high speed warp hand. She was a member of the Bio Home Demonstration Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and was the oldest member of Hartwell First United Methodist Church, teaching in various classes. Born in Hart County, Mrs. Milford was a daughter of the late Mae Watson Cobb and Sam Cobb Sr. and was the widow of Roy Dan Milford. She was preceded in death by a son, Danny Gary Milford; three sisters, Dora Owens, Ann Lizzie Mitchell and Helen Cobb; and a brother, George Washington Cobb. She was retired from Candlewick Yarns after 30 years of service and was a member of Canon Baptist Church. Phyllis O'Neal, M.D. Elberton Phyllis Johnson O'Neal, N.D. of 818 Sherwood Drive, Elberton, died at her home Thursday, June 24, 1999 after an extended illness. She was Elbert County's first female medical doctor and practiced there for 50 years. A native of Bowman, Mrs. O'Neal was a daughter of Dr. Walton A. Johnson and Ruth Teasley Johnson. Her fascination with medicine began when she would sit in her father's office and look through his medical books and specimens. She was a graduate of Agnes Scott College and The Medical College of Georgia, where she was one of two women in her class, graduating at the age of 23. She began her medical practice as an internist but switched to anesthesiology when she began practicing in Elberton. She and her husband, Dr. John B. O'Neal III., brought the first anesthesia machine to Elberton, where "Dr. Phyllis" assisted with surgery in the mornings while her four children were in school. She served on the staff of Elbert County Memorial Hospital, was Medical Director for Elbert County's three nursing homes and a member of the American Medical Association. A strong believer in education, she testified in front of the Sibley Commission during the 1950's, when there was a movement to close the public schools rather than integrate. Despite the risk of financial and social repercussions, she took the then controversial stand of keeping the public schools open. She was very involved in her church and community. She was an active member of Elberton First United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities, including membership in the Altar Guild, the United Methodist Women, the Administrative Board and was editor of "A History of the First United Methodist Church, Elberton, Ga." In the 1970's, she and her husband served as medical missionaries to Montero, Bolivia through the United Methodist Church. They provided medical equipment, vaccines and medical training to students. They also raised funds to build an emergency wing at the Montero Community Hospital. Dr. Phyllis also served her community as an active member of the Elberton Civic League and President of the Elbert County Chapter of the Council on Child Abuse. She was involved in the founding of the Spring Valley Corporation, a non-profit group that built and governed Spring Valley Convalescent Center and Petersburg Towers. In addition to her many professional and civic accomplishments, she was a devoted wife and mother. She was preceded in death by her husband, John B. O'Neal III., M.D. and is survived by her children, Patricia O'Neal Paterson of Morrow, Ga., Pamela O'Neal, M.D. of Resaca, Ga., John B. O'Neal IV of Macon, Ga. and Peggy O'Neal of Fairbanks, Alaska; and four grandchildren, Joseph Paterson, Katie McIntosh, Bryan O'Neal and Michael O'Neal. Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Elberton First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Edgar Padgett and Dr. Wallace Wheeles officiating. Internment will be in Elmhurst Cemetery.
