A native of Athens since the age of 3, Mr. Upchurch was born October 27, 1925, in Charlotte, N.C. He was a son of the late George Vance Upchurch and Marion West Lay. He was the founder of Upchurch Realty and Upchurch Insurance Agency, and served as Chairman of the Board of Coldwell Banker Upchurch Realty, the company he founded in 1973 and owned until 1998. He received numerous professional and community service awards, including: Coldwell Banker International's Preserving the Trust Award, the Thomas Spence Griffin Memorial Award; Athens Regional Medical Center's J.W. Fanning Humanitarian Award; and Athens Realtor of the Year, 1981. He led Coldwell Banker Upchurch Realty to be named the #1 residential affiliate in Georgia and in 1995, the company was honored as the #1 International Coldwell Banker office. He attended the University of Georgia, was a WWII veteran and a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church; the March of Dimes board; City Club; Kappa Alpha Fraternity; Gridiron Society; University of Georgia President's Club; University Trust, Executive Board; Northeast Georgia Council of Boy Scouts, Executive Board; Clarke County Hospital Authority (3 years as chairman); the Heart Fund and United Way. Robin Winters Rich, career IBM employee, civic leader, popular golfer and crusader for breast cancer awareness; has succumbed to the disease at age 61. At her death she was with her family at home in Springdale Estates in Cruso, N.C. Robin was first diagnosed in 1984 and despite her illness, continued to be active in social, athletic and civic activities. She was a former member of Jennings Mill Country Club and in 1995 won the Georgia Amateur Classic. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, and a graduate of Woodlawn High School, she joined IBM in 1960. Over her 31-year career she served in a variety of key assignments and won numerous achievement awards. She was IBM's first female sales representative in the Eastern Region, and at the time of her retirement was in a task force helping public school teachers introduce computers to their students. Upon leaving IBM, Robin moved to a Commerce, Georgia farm. Despite her illness she remained active - raising miniature horses, playing tournament golf and becoming the first woman member of the Commerce Kiwanis. She received numerous awards for service and in 1999 became Commerce Kiwanis first woman president. Although too ill to complete her term of office, in September 1999 she was named the Kiwanian of the year. Her husband, Duain, of Canton, North Carolina, three children, Fred Clark Jackson of Trussville, Alabama, Robi Lynn Griffin of Ashland City, Tennessee, Kenneth Lee Jackson of Acworth, Georgia and five grandchildren survive Robin.
