Story last updated at 8:43 a.m. on Saturday, August 28, 1999 Richard C. Freeman Judge ATLANTA -- U.S. District Judge Richard C. Freeman, a former alderman who served on the federal bench for 28 years and was known for his direct approach, died at an Atlanta hospital. He was 72. Freeman died Thursday at Piedmont Hospital after suffering complications from heart ailments and diabetes. Colleagues remembered Freeman as a direct, occasionally gruff, but steadfastly fair jurist, who treated those in his court equally. A Republican, Freeman was nominated by President Nixon and confirmed by the Senate in April 1971 to serve in the Northern District of Georgia. ''He was a fair judge who cut through the chaff and got to the heart of issues more than most, and he did not mind stepping on toes to get there,'' said Senior U.S. District Judge Marvin Shoob. ''He was pretty direct. He didn't suffer fools for too long.'' Freeman served as a member of the Atlanta Board of Aldermen, now the City Council, from 1962 to 1971. In 1962, he was named chairman of the board's Aviation Committee, which was instrumental in the development of Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport. He is survived by his wife, Christina Rice Freeman, of Atlanta, and a daughter, Holly Black, of Atlanta. A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at Northside United Methodist Church in Atlanta. online athensAthens Daily News/Banner Herald Šopyright 1999 Athens Newspapers Inc. Story last updated at 8:43 a.m. on Saturday, August 28, 1999 George H. 'Dude' Brown Musician WASHINGTON -- George Henderson ''Dude'' Brown, a Washington jazz drummer who began his career as a teen-ager playing with pianist Jelly Roll Morton and who later toured with Louis Armstrong and other jazz greats, died Aug. 19 at his home in Washington. He was 79 and had a heart ailment. He toured with Sonny Stitt, Lionel Hampton, Gene Ammons and Illinois Jaquette and also had played with Shirley Horn, Billy Taylor, Clark Terry, Thad Jones and others. He also recorded locally. Survivors include four children, Joyce Middleton of District Heights, Md.; Sylvester Brown of Landover, Md.; and Jeannette Brown and Joanne Badgett, both of Washington; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Brown played at local venues, often accompanying pianist John Eaton. He also performed on an Eaton program about composer and orchestra leader Duke Ellington. In between jobs, he taught drums privately in Washington. Brown was a superb drummer, and he loved to perform, fellow musicians said. But he was known as a mercurial figure and as something of a character who would walk away from a job if displeased. It was part of the Dude Brown legend, Eaton recalled, that while touring with Louis Armstrong in the late 1940s, Brown packed up and left when the world-famous trumpeter asked him to play something differently. Brown ''had become part of the militant bebop movement'' at that point in his career, Eaton said. Armstrong was still playing more traditional jazz. ''Dude,'' Brown was said to have retorted as he dismantled his drum set, ''I don't play that way.'' Brown's marriage to Sarah Brown ended in divorce. online athensAthens Daily News/Banner Herald Šopyright 1999 Athens Newspapers Inc.
