A native of East Point, Mr. Thompson was a son of the late Charles Hillard and Myrtle Murphy Thompson. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Toccoa, where he served on the administrative board and was former chairman of the building and grounds committee. He was a former member of Toccoa Lions Club and a former Scout Master for Troop 77. He was a member of Toccoa Housing Authority Board and was a former member of Stephens County Tax Assessors. He was retired as Vice President of Toccoa Casket Co. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Acree-Davis Funeral Home with the Revs. Jim Bocian and Jack Lamb officiating. A native and lifelong resident of Madison County, he was a son of the late Willie H. and Dora Sailers Fleeman, and the widower of Claudine Elizabeth Fleeman. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Fleeman and Clemons Bridges. He was a retired farmer and a member of Hull Baptist Church. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:29 a.m. on Tuesday, December 28, 1999 Dr. Joy Porter Williams Athens Dr. Joy Porter Williams, 70, of 235 Stoneland Drive died Dec. 26, 1999. A native of Blackshear, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Justice J. and Elsie Norton Porter. Dr. Williams earned her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Georgia. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi honorary society. Dr. Williams was an Assistant Professor of Microbiology at the University of Georgia. She retired from the University in 1992 after serving 22 years as associate Director of the Honor's Program and Coordinator of Advanced Placement. She served ten years as College Science Supervisor for student teachers serving internships and student teaching experience in biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as teaching biology to elementary education students. Prior to returning to UGA in 1963, Dr. Williams served two years as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratories. Dr. Williams was a member of the National Collegiate Honor's Council, Past President of the Southern Regional Honor's Council, and Past President of the Georgia Honor's Council. She was a charter member of the SRHC and the GHC. Dr. Williams was also Past President of the UGA Retired Faculty Association. She was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church, serving as chair of several committees and a member of the administrative board. She was also Past President of the UGA Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi and Past Secretary of Sigma Xi Research Society. Her husband, Dr. A. Kenneth Williams, and two children, Bruce and Sally Pat Williams, and Kenneth Williams survive her, both of Athens. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Olga Porter of Demopolis, Ala. and seven nieces and nephews, and Janice Williams of Valdosta, Ga., a grandson, Bruce Edwin Williams and a granddaughter, Joy Elizabeth Williams, both of Athens. A memorial service will be held at Athens First United Methodist Church, Wednesday, Dec. 29 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be at Bridges Funeral Home Tuesday, Dec. 28 from 5:30 until 7:30 PM.
