Beckham Athens Gladys Viola Beckham, 94, of 410 Morton Road, formerly of Atlanta, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999. A native of Schenectady, N.Y., Mrs. Beckham was the widow of William A. Beckham. She was a homemaker and was of the Methodist faith. Services will be private. Survivors include a son, Edward A. Beckham, Athens; and two grandsons. Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, is in charge of the arrangements. A.C. Carpenter Toccoa The Rev. Albert Curtis Carpenter, 92, of 711 Valley Drive died Monday, March 29, 1999. A native of Cornelia, the Rev. Carpenter was a son of the late James and Arminda Segars Carpenter and was the widower of Mearl Welborn Carpenter. He served in the ministry for 56 years. He was the founder of Calvary Baptist Church, Toccoa, where he served as pastor for a number of years. He served at Level Grove Baptist Church, Cornelia, Rowan Mills Baptist Church, Salisbury, N.C., Grace Baptist Church, Gainesville, and Macon Drive Baptist Church, Atlanta. He served as interim pastor at Rock Springs Baptist Church, Hollywood Baptist Church, Blue Heights Baptist Church and Faith Tabernacle. He was the founder and director of Calvary Radio Hour for 53 years. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sunny Side Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Evans, Neal King and Billy Burrell officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Level Grove Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Sallie Mae Collins Carpenter; a daughter, Janet Nash, Athens; three stepchildren, Willette Ericson, Johnson City, Tenn., Linda Satterfield, Atlanta, and Debra Moore, Headland, Ala.; a sister, Verdie Lipscomb, Cartersville; a brother, Roy Carpenter, Cornelia; two grandsons; five great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and five great-stepgrandchildren. A native of Athens, Mrs. Glover was a daughter of Cammie and A.B. Healan, Winder. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Northlake Baptist Church. A native of Brooks County, Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Duncan Bowden Kennedy and was the widow of Albert Chapman Martin. Formerly of Camilla, she had lived in the Athens area for the last twenty years. She was a member of Tuckston United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Stella Hancock Sunday School class, the Co-workers Class and Hardeman-Phillips Circle of United Methodist Women. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Tuckston United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Thrasher officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Campground, Morven. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years of service. He was a member of Lexington United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School and served on the administrative board. He served in the Korean War and was retired from the U.S. Army as a colonel after 25 years of active and reserve time. He was a member of Lexington Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and the Shrine.
