OBITUARIES Story last updated at 11:18 a.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2000 Dr. Sam McNeill Talmadge Athens Dr. Sam McNeill Talmadge died on August 1, 2000, the last living member of a once large family that had lived continuously in Athens since 1820. He was born on January 23, 1910 to Charles Allen and Justine Erwin Talmadge. He obtained his early education in the public schools of Athens, which he always held in high esteem. His B.S. degree was obtained from the University of Georgia where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Chi Phi Fraternity and the track and crosscountry teams. His M.D. degree was from Harvard Medical School where in his third year he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary society. He was also a member of the Aesculapian Club and Boylston Medical Society. His graduate training, in surgery, was at the Massachusetts General Hospital for four years. During the latter part of his residency there he married Miss Alice Eleanor Jarvis of Maynard, Massachusetts. In 1939 Doctor and Mrs. Talmadge returned to Athens where he began his surgical practice. With the outbreak of World War II he obtained his commission in the Army Medical Corps and was stationed at Lawson General Hospital in Atlanta. In April 1944 he transferred to an Auxiliary Surgical Team and was soon thereafter sent to England. There he was assigned to one of several surgical teams designated to serve in the invasion of Normandy at Omaha Beach. Among others, his team continued to work in mobile surgical hospitals throughout the European campaign. At the end of the conflict he was Chief of Surgery at a station hospital in northeast Germany in the rank of Major. He returned to Athens in July 1945. Dr. Talmadge was soon actively engaged with a few other younger doctors in recruiting well-trained physicians coming out of the services and establishing a medical center to accommodate them. Throughout his early career in Athens, he endeavored to organize clinic services to aid the needy and to promote innovations in the hospitals. Following his long-planned retirement in 1969, Dr. Talmadge continued to act as an administrative assistant to the then Athens General Hospital on a part-time basis while working with the Georgia Medical Society in a program for continuing education in small hospitals in northeast Georgia. Dr. Talmadge was a member of the American College of Surgeons, in which he served one year as president of its Georgia Chapter. He was also a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgeons and a member of the Eastern Surgical Society. Most recently he was a member of the ''The Robert G. Stephens Bible Study Group.'' Following retirement, as long planned, Dr. Talmadge and his wife moved to the mountains of western North Carolina where they spent many happy and rewarding years before returning to Athens in 1993. Dr. Talmadge was preceded in death by his devoted wife of almost 60 years in 1995. He is survived by Mr. and Mrs. John Erwin Talmadge of Atlanta, Mr. and Mrs. Lamartine G. Hardman III of Athens, Mr. and Mrs. Sam M. Talmadge, Jr. of Atlanta, nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter whose birth is imminent.
