OBITUARIES Story last updated at 7:22 p.m. on Sunday, October 1, 2000 Thomas Arthur Elliott Atlanta ''A Life of Invention'' Thomas Arthur Elliott passed away peacefully at home on September 30, 2000, from complications due to prostate cancer. Mr. Elliott was born February 9, 1917, in Atlanta, Ga., but lived his early life in Athens, Ga., where he attended Athens High School. He then attended the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., for two years before transferring to the Georgia Institute of Technology. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1939 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. He was then called into the Army in May 1942 and spent most of his service in the South Pacific in the 96th Coastal Artillery and Anti-Aircraft Unit. He volunteered for the intelligence branch and served in Hawaii, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, New Guinea and many smaller islands, and was stationed in the Philippines when the war ended. He earned three Battle Stars and also the Bronze Star medal for bravery. Upon being discharged in December 1945 he joined Dillard Munford in starting the original Munford Company. He supervised the building of the rock wool plant on Confederate Avenue which he ran until he left to work at Georgia Tech in the Mechanical Design Division of the Research Institute. Mr. Elliott did many interesting projects at Tech and was recently featured in the Tech Topics Magazine for his work and inventions developed during his time there. While at Tech he went on loan to Stone Mountain Park as chief engineer supervising the completion of carving. Before long he was asked to become the General Manager of the entire park facility. He implemented the acquisition and installation of the Carillon from the New York Worlds Fair; he helped with the design and the building of the river boat, the grist mill, and the acquisition and installation of the covered bridge from Athens, Ga. Under his supervision the park became self-supporting. Mr. Elliott instituted many new events at the park including the Yellow Daisy Festival, the Highland Games, the campgrounds, the golf course and the laser show. During his time as General Manager he brought all the concessions under the park management and made it the most visited park in the U.S. after Disney World. When he retired from Stone Mountain in 1975 he started an engineering consulting business testifying as an expert witness in many court cases involving product liability and accident reconstruction. During his retirement years he continued his consulting work but began to spend more and more time with his hobbies which included antique clock restoration and antique furniture reproduction. He was active in the Atlanta Chapter 24 of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors and developed, with a small group of friends, a precision clock that is wound only once a year.
