OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:14 a.m. on Monday, April 3, 2000 Rosalynn Carter's mother, Allie Smith, dies PLAINS, Ga. -- The mother of former first lady Rosalynn Carter, who once sold milk and butter to support her four children, has died at age 94. Allie M. Smith, a lifelong resident of Sumter County in southwest Georgia, died late Saturday night at a hospital, the Carter Center said Sunday. A family spokeswoman, Deanna Congileo, said the Carters had no immediate statement. A funeral service for Smith is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Plains United Methodist Church. Born Dec. 24, 1905, Smith was an accomplished seamstress who also sold milk and butter to support her four children after her husband, mechanic Edgar Smith, died of leukemia in 1940. For years she served as treasurer of Plains United Methodist Church and was a retired postal clerk. Carter, 72, is the oldest of Smith's four children. When Smith went to work at a grocery store to support the family, Carter assumed much of the responsibility for caring for her sister and two brothers. She also contributed to the family income by working after school in a beauty parlor. ''We were very poor and worked hard,'' Carter once said. The Carters were married in 1946. Jimmy Carter, a former Georgia governor, served as president from 1977 to 1981. Since he left office, the Carters have concentrated on their writing and humanitarian work, including projects for Habitat for Humanity, the group that builds housing for the poor. In addition to the former president and first lady, Smith is survived by a daughter, two sons, a daughter-in-law and a son-in-law, 13 grandchildren -- including the Carters' four children -- 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
