He died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000. His parents moved to Winder, Ga. when he was about 5 years old. He attended local school and graduated from Winder High School. During WWII he was employed by Southeastern Ship Builder in Savannah, Ga. When he was drafted in the U.S. Army, he received his basic training at Camp Wheeler in Macon, Ga. and was part of the 2nd. Division. Mr. Orr went to South Wales in 1943 to receive training with the British Commandos and became a member of the Regimental Raiders. His group landed D-Day on Omaha Beach. He was seriously wounded 62 days later by a sniper near St. Low France. Mr. John Orr received a purple heart and two (2) bronze stars. After the war Mr. Orr was employed as a Park Police officer with the National Park service in Washington, D.C. He was later employed by the U.S. Post Office in Atlanta, Ga. as a railway mail clerk. He later moved to the U.S. Justice Dept. as an Agent for U.S. Customs based in Savannah, Ga. Mr. Orr returned to Winder in 1960 and was a prominent local businessman until his retirement in 1977. He was survived by his wife, Jackie Orr. Children, son Mike Orr, daughter and son in law, Beverly and Lamar Manders, son and daughter in law, Johnny and Tammy Orr and son, Arnie Orr. Grandchildren, Brandy Manders, Mrs. Chris (Misty) Freeman, Haley Orr, Michelle Orr, Dylan Orr, Andrea Grizzle and Sam Grizzle. A great grandson, Andrew Freeman. A brother and sister in law, Winford (Wimp) and Larue Orr of Winder. Local nephews and their wives Mark and Becky Orr and Dr. Steven and Bonnie Orr. As well as nieces and nephews from South Ga. Funeral services will be 3:00 Friday in Smith Memory Chapel. Rev. Ronald Hewatt will officiate. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Chester Sr. Greensboro Willie English Chester Sr., 60, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000. A native of Greene County, Mr. Chester was a son of James Chester Sr. and Mattie B. Turner. He was a member of White Plains Second Baptist Church, where he was chairman of the deacon, usher and Sunday school boards, was Sunday school superintendent and assistant church clerk/treasurer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended Paine College, Clark-Atlanta University and the University of Georgia. He was an educator in Greene County for 32 years and served as teacher, principal and co-principal. He was a council member and mayor pro-tem of Greensboro City Council and was president of Greensboro Lions Club. He was a member of Northeast Georgia Regional Planning Commission and of Leadership Georgia. Jolly Watkinsville Hazel Plaxico Jolly, 88 of Watkinsville, formerly of Tucker, died peacefully in her sleep on February 3, 2000. A longtime resident of Decatur and Tucker, she was a member of Decatur First Christian Church, teaching Sunday school, serving as board moderator and as an elder emeritus. Mrs. Jolly was very active in the Christian Women's Fellowship having served on numerous boards and as state CWF president. She was a member of the Emory University Hospital Auxiliary, working in the gift shop. After moving to Watkinsville she moved her membership to Antioch Christian Church. Mrs. Jolly was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene E. Jolly and is survived by daughters and sons in law: Peggy and Jay Norton of Atlanta and Eleanor and David Perkins of Watkinsville; grandchildren: Jim Norton and wife, Michel, Richard Norton and wife Rachel, David Perkins III, Michael Perkins and wife Christine; four great grandchildren; two sisters: Eleanor Plaxico and Elizabeth Miles; one brother, Tommy Plaxico; several nieces and nephews. Survivors include four daughters, Emma Sims and Annette Sims, both of Statham, Mary Morrison, Hoschton, and Eloise Sims-Sifford, San Bernardino, Calif.; six sons, Clarence Sims and James R.L. Sims, both of Middletown, Ohio, Arthur Lee Sims, Charles Allen Sims and Herman Sims, all of Chicago, and John Thomas Sims, Statham; 25 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. A native of Washington, Mr. Arnett was a son of the late Berrie and Marchie Arnett. He was a member of Colo Zion Methodist Church. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at McLendon Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rocky Mount Baptist Church.
