OBITUARIES Story last updated at 10:41 p.m. on Monday, July 3, 2000 James Foster Turnbull Atlanta Mr. James Foster Turnbull, died suddenly on July 3, 2000, during a stay at the Dunwoody Home of his son. A native Georgian, he was born to Selma Ora Blackwell and Thomas Foster Turnbull in the family home in Bishop on April 16, 1925. He was educated in the Oconee County Schools and at the University of Georgia. Following service in the U.S. Air Force during the latter stages of W.W.II, he met and married the former Helen Rose Johnson of Athens, GA. Their March 30, 1950, marriage in the Parsonage of the First Methodist Church of Anderson, SC, began a marriage that lasted more than 50 years. Mr. Turnbull began his business career at the Lockheed-Georgia Company in 1951 where he rose through the management ranks to assume the position of Director in charge of Avionics and Flight Delivery Administration. During his employment at Lockheed he was a member of the Management Club and served on numerous charitable projects. Following an early retirement in 1985, he enjoyed travel with family and friends and time spent with his grandchildren. He divided his time between homes in Atlanta and Hilton Head, SC. Mr. Turnbull was a faithful husband and father, having served as PTA President and Band Booster Club President at Sequoyah High School. He took great pride in his sons' career accomplishments and in the lives of his beloved grandchildren. He was a faithful Christian man, having served in the honored position of Elder in the Brookhaven Christian Church where he was a member for more than 40 years. His contributions there and to the family and friends who survive him, will endure for generations. He leaves his beloved wife, Helen Rose, sons, Michael Foster and James Richard, daughter-in-law Elizabeth Turnbull, grandson Grayson Foster and granddaughter Madeline Elizabeth, all of Atlanta; brothers, Charles Turnbull of Athens; Thomas Turnbull of Bishop; sister, Ann Turnbull Veals of Watkinsville; numerous cousins and many friends. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 6, at 11:00 AM at the Brookhaven Christian Church with the Rev. Anne G. Bonney officiating. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 10:40 p.m. on Monday, July 3, 2000 George Gordon Ward Athens Mr George Gordon Ward, of Athens died Saturday, July 1, 2000, after a long illness, at the age of 74. He was born in Ellijay and grew up in Atlanta. In 1944, his senior year at Boys High he joined the USMC and saw active duty in the Pacific. A member of the Second Marine Division, he participated in combat on the island of Saipan, a major stepping stone in the war against Japan. He returned home after the war to complete his education, eventually earning a Master's Degree in Journalism from the University of Georgia. After several additional years in the Army and Air Force, including stations in Germany and France during the Cold War, George returned to Atlanta and ended his career in Civil Service as Chief of Training at the IRS, a post which he resigned from for health reasons. Mr. Gordon is survived by his wife, Marguerite; daughter, Jo Rice and her husband Harry of Danielsville; sister Virginia Brown of Woodstock; grandchildren George D. Ott of Jacksonville, Fla., and Kirsten M. Ott of Athens; great grandson, Tyler Matthew Ott, and nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 6, at 2 o'clock at Oglethorpe Hill. Mrs. Gibson was the wife of George M. Gibson who survives her. Mrs. Gibson was the only daughter of William B. Green and Lula Williams Green. She was reared in Atlanta where she attended the Parochial School of the Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church. She was graduated from Georgetown Visitation College of Washington, D.C., and Agnes Scott College of Decatur, Ga. Mrs. Gibson had resided in Athens since 1958. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and a sustaining member of the Athens Junior League. For many years she was business manager of Gibson's Men's Wear. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, William Andrew Gibson of Athens, Margaret Elizabeth Gibson Vuillet of Paris, France, Mary Ellen Gibson of Atlanta, and Thomas J. Gibson of Jacksonville, Florida; and five grandchildren.
