The service is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Hodgson Hall of the Performing Arts Center off East Campus Road. Other details of the service will be announced today. Sherman, director of the prestigious Peabody Awards program and a UGA professor, died Tuesday afternoon at the Ramsey Center after collapsing during a lunchtime basketball game. He had served as director of the Peabody Awards since 1991. The awards, which recognize outstanding achievement in broadcast and cable, are considered among the most coveted honors in the industry. Sherman, 47, said he considered the Peabody directorship a ''sacred trust.'' From his office in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, Sherman oversaw all aspects of the 60-year-old program, from issuing the call for entries to orchestrating the annual New York awards ceremony. This year's event is scheduled for May 22 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Sherman was born in New York City and grew up in Queens. He did his undergraduate work at Queens College of the City University of New York and got his doctoral degree from Pennsylvania State University. He is survived by his wife, Candice Sherman, assistant director of student activities at UGA; two children, Eric, 17, and Jessica, 12; his father, Harold Sherman of Queens; a brother, Stanley Sherman, of Florida; and two sisters, Helene Sherman and Natalie Sherman, both of New York City. Sheila Nevins, executive vice president for original programming at HBO and a recipient of a personal Peabody Award this year, said Sherman was ''the heart and soul of the Peabody Awards and a champion of reality programming. ... When Barry called you to say you had won a Peabody, you knew you had done something really special. He is irreplaceable.'' Sherman joined the Grady college in 1981. A scholar of broadcast history, he said he was drawn to UGA by the opportunity to use the Peabody Archives for research. One of Sherman's major initiatives was starting a fund-raising campaign to create an endowment for the Peabody program. Sherman taught courses in media management and telecommunications and had written textbooks for both classes. He headed the telecommunications department at UGA from 1987 to 1991, when he was named director of the Peabody program. A memorial fund has been set up in Sherman's memory to provide money for the Peabody's student judges to travel to New York each year for the awards presentation. Checks for the fund should be made out to the UGA Foundation and designated for the Barry Sherman Memorial Fund. Checks should be sent to Bill Herringdine, Director of Development, Journalism School, University of Georgia, 30602. send flowers to this funeral share your memories email the editor send this notice to a friend Šopyright 2000 Athens Newspapers Inc.
