Robinson Jefferson Jackson Funeral Home, Jefferson, Ga., announces the death of Henry D. Robinson, age 74, of 224 Westmoreland Drive, Jefferson, Ga., October 2, 2000 at Athens Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 3rd. from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. Services will be Oct. 4th at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Jefferson, Ga., with private interment in Woodbine Cemetery. The Revs. Cary Hillard and Richard Hoard officiating. Mr. Robinson was the son of the late Claude and Mary Sue Pirkle Robinson. Mr. Robinson began an extensive 29 year career in public service in 1961 as tax commissioner of Jackson County. He served in this job for 13 years, during which time he was elected president of the Georgia County Officers Association. From 1976 until his retirement in 1991, Mr. Robinson was chairman of the Jackson County Board of Commissioners. This was the longest tenure in the history of Jackson County. He received many recognitions, including Citizen of the Year and 9th District Commissioner of the Year and served on many state and regional authorities and boards. Mr. Robinson served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and afterward, received his BS from Piedmont College where he was on the baseball and basketball teams. In 1996 Mr. Robinson was coaxed from retirement to run for a Jackson County Commissioner Post. He won election and served from 1997 until his death. Mr. Robinson was a deacon of the First Baptist Church in Jefferson. Member and past president of Jefferson Lions Club and was a member of the Jefferson Board of Education. He recently received a ''Lifetime Achievement Award'' from the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce. Quote from fellow commissioners: ''Henry's insight into progress was beyond most observers. Jackson County grew in stature. Clean government became up front policy; our old image faded into progressive policies; industry looked at us with favor and located here.'' You might not always agree with Mr. Henry, but you respect where he's coming from on any given issue. He's coming from a wealth of knowledge and a background of commitment.
