Nutter Philanthropist XENIA, Ohio -- Businessman-philanthropist Ervin J. Nutter, for whom buildings at Wright State University and the University of Kentucky are named, died Wednesday after a long illness. He was 85, and had suffered heart problems that led to a series of strokes. Nutter, a mechanical engineer, founded Elano Corp., which fabricates metal parts for jet airplanes. In 1985, he sold his interest in the company. Nutter was appointed by former Gov. James Rhodes to serve on Wright State's board of trustees. He donated more than $1.5 million to build the $34.5 million sports and entertainment hall at the university, which opened in 1990. Nutter, a University of Kentucky alumnus, is a member of that university's Hall of Distinguished Alumni. He and his wife, Zoe, donated $1 million to establish professorships in mechanical engineering and $1 million to help build the E.J. Nutter Football Training Facility. A native of Banks County, Mrs. Hulsey was a daughter of the late Walton H. and Pearl Caudell Purcell and was the widow of Harrison Paul Hulsey. She was retired from Coats & Clark after 25 years and was a member of Hill Street Baptist Church, where she was a member of Faith Sunday School Class.
