OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:37 a.m. on Sunday, May 7, 2000 Phillip Byard Wachtel Athens Phillip Byard Wachtel of 220 Tanglewood Dr., Athens, 79, died May 4, 2000. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the late Willis P.B. and Hazel Wiant Wachtel on Nov. 1, 1920. He was a graduate of the Bolles School, Jacksonville, Florida, and Parks Air College, St. Louis, Missouri. During World War II he was a flight instructor for the Army Air Corps Air Transport Command. He was a Captain with National Air Lines until it merged with Pan America World Airways until his retirement in 1980. He had been a supervisory pilot and instructor on the 747. He had a long membership in the Airline Pilots Association and served as Master Chairman. Mr. Wachtel and his family were longtime residents of Coral Gables, Florida. He was a skilled craftsman and built and flew a Pitts Special Acrobatic biplane, many model sailing ships and several pieces of furniture. He was a member of Athens Country Club since moving to Athens in 1983. He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Gayle Johnson Wachtel; sons Peter A. and Philip Wachtel Jr.; grandsons, Adam and John Brian Wachtel; and a brother, William Wachtel of Laguna Beach, California. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 8, 2000, at the Bernstein Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Robert Googe officiating. He was the former owner of Thomas Transfer Company in Athens, a graduate of the University of Georgia with a BBA degree, a former member of Delta Tau Delta and performed in the Dixie Redcoat Band. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a charter member of the Beech Haven Baptist Church, a former member of the Athens Country Club as well as local civic clubs. While living in Arizona, Nevada and Georgia, he was employed as a licensed stockbroker. He is survived by his wife, Harriet Holland Thomas, a son, Jerry Holland Thomas of Nevada; two grandchildren, Michael and Courtney Thomas of Nevada; two sisters, one niece, several nephews and cousins.
