Simmonds Southern Pines, N.C. Ethel Louise Byerly Simmonds, 88, died March 4 of natural causes at Penick Village, the Episcopal Church retirement community in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Mrs. Simmonds was born in Cooleemee, North Carolina, the daughter of Dr. Andrew Baxter Byerly and Ethel Grimes Byerly. She was a graduate of the North Carolina College for Women in Greensboro, where she earned a degree in physical education. During her college years Ethel Byerly served as a summer volunteer at an Episcopal Mission in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia. This experience and an active involvement in campus ministry led her to enroll at the Church Training School in Philadelphia after her graduation from Women's College. It was here that she learned of the House of Bethany, an Episcopal mission school for girls in Cape Mount (now Robertsport), Liberia, where she became a teacher in 1933. It was in Liberia that she met her future husband, Harvey Albert Simmonds, an Episcopal priest from Troy, New York, who taught at St. John's, the boys school in Cape Mount. They were married on December 15, 1934, and served together in Liberia until 1946. On returning to the United States Father Simmonds accepted a position at Saint Andrew's School near Sewanee, Tennessee. Mrs. Simmonds taught at Saint Andrew's and the Sewanee Public School until 1972, four years after her husband's death, when she retired to the Byerly family homeplace on Friendship Church Road in Lexington, North Carolina. During the years in Lexington Mrs. Simmonds was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church, and served on the Vestry there. In 1991 she moved to Penick Village in Southern Pines, and became a member of Emmanuel Church. She is survived by two sons, Harvey Albert Simmonds, Jr., now Brother Benedict Simmonds of Berryville, Virginia, and William Andrew Simmonds of Athens, Georgia; and two granddaughters, Amy Simmonds Pridgen and Hadley Simmonds Morris, both of Atlanta.
