She was a homemaker and was a lifetime member of New Hope Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:14 a.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2000 Annie Laura Pace Watkinsville Annie Laura Pace, 74, of 1170 Barber Creek Drive, Watkinsville, Ga. died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, from complications following surgery. Mrs. Pace, a 38-year resident of the Athens-Oconee County area, was a prominent public educator and much loved local icon. Born September 19, 1925 in Murphy, N.C., she dispelled stereotypes in 1943 by graduating high school as Salutatorian at age 16 and completing a bachelor's degree in education from Western Carolina University in 1946 with honors. She obtained her Master's Degree in Science Education in 1963 from The University of Georgia, graduating Cum Laude. Her college career included: Vice President of state BSU, Assistant to Dean of Women, member of Alpha Phi Sigma, and Who's Who in American College of Universities. Mrs. Pace taught in public education for 50 years, 15 of which were at Oconee County High School, and 10 of which were at Cedar Shoals High School in Clarke County. She became a member of NC, VA and GA Educators and was a life member of the Georgia Education Association. She taught as an adjunct faculty member at Truett McConnell College, Watkinsville, GA for 13 years where she ended her career in 1996. Mrs. Pace received the Distinguished DuPont Teacher Award for Chemistry, the Presidential Award of Excellence in Science Teaching in 1985, and was honored at the White House by President Ronald Reagan. She was a member of the Outstanding American Educators, and was selected Star Teacher six times during her teaching career at Oconee County High School. She was a noted Teacher of the Year at Cedar Shoals High School, as well as the recipient of the same award for the Clarke County School System. Mrs. Pace taught advanced science at the Governor's Honor Program in 1978 and 1979. Mrs. Pace was a member of Watkinsville First Baptist Church, a member of the Watkinsville Garden Club, a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, and she sang with the Sweet Adelines. Funeral services will be held at Watkinsville First Baptist Church, Friday, February 11, 2000 at 2 p.m. The Rev. Joe Argo, Jr. of Fort Worth, Texas and Durrell Rice of Watkinsville, GA will officiate. Internment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park. Daughter of the late Edwin L. and Myrtle L. Mulkey, she was preceded in death by her husband Warren Alton Pace; brothers, Edwin, Roger, and Jimmy; a sister, Georgia; and a son, Andy. Survivors include her children, Danny L. Pace and wife Judy, of Watkinsville, GA; Patricia P. Coker and husband, Larry, of Watkinsville, GA; Larry A. Pace, of Shreveport, LA; Phyllis P.
