OBITUARIES Story last updated at 7:38 p.m. on Monday, October 9, 2000 Eugene Ingwall Johnson Kerrville, Texas Eugene Ingwall Johnson passed away quietly Oct. 3, 2000, sitting at home in his easy chair in Kerrville, Texas. He would have been 88 Oct. 22. Born in Houston in 1912 to Ingwall and Ella Johnson, Eugene grew up in Minneapolis, Minn., the youngest of four children. His father helped found the citrus industry in Texas, but returned to Minnesota after a frost killed their grapefruit grove. Eugene is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara Davis Johnson, formerly of Lexington, Mass., a son, Evans Carlson Johnson; grandchildren Yebuny Rebecca, Nancy Ella and David Evans Johnson all of Kerrville; his sister, Louise Swenson of Woodbury, Minn., and numerous nieces and nephews and their families in Minnesota, New Mexico and California. A daughter, Kristina, died in infancy. Eugene graduated from Minneapolis Central High School in 1929, and then worked for five years for the Soo Line Railroad in St. Paul, Minn. During this period, he also became very active in the young adult programs of his Methodist church, eventually becoming a licensed lay minister and pastoring a small church in Cedar, Minn., for two years. He graduated from The American University in Wash., D.C., in 1938, majoring in history. During his first two college years, he lived in Herndon, Va., and pastored three small churches in the area where Dulles Airport now stands. He developed his sermons in his Model A Ford during his journeys to and from A.U. His junior year was spent as an exchange student at Lingnan University in Canton, China. During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Infantry, rising from private to major in the intelligence service. He served in the China-Burma-India theater on Gen. Joseph Stilwell's staff, earning the Bronze Star. After VJ Day, he was sent back to China alone on a six-month assignment for the Pentagon. Returning later to college on the G.I. Bill, Eugene earned his M.A. and Ed.D. Degrees at Stanford University in three years, specializing in urban sociology and community education. At Stanford, he was elected to the Phi Delta Kappa honorary education fraternity. While on the faculty of San Bernardino (Calif.) Valley College in the mid- 1950s, he and his staff coined the term ''metroplex'' to describe San Bernardino and its satellite communities. The term is now in common usage. On the faculty of Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., for seven years in the latter 1950s and 60s, Eugene developed interactive television via the ''Metroplex Assembly'' programs of the university's public television station. This was the earliest version of TV's talk-back format. Eugene later served as executive director of the Adult Education Association of the U.S. in Wash., D.C., and was elected in 1997 to the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame. He taught for eight years in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Georgia in Athens and retired in 1985. As a professor of adult and continuing education, he founded the Pecan Hill Seminars, held in his home as a ''final exam'' preceded by dinner and followed by an intense discussion on assigned questions into the wee hours. He was called on as a consultant on urban affairs, community development, and continuing education by more than 20 universities and several private organizations and federal agencies. Eugene traveled extensively, from Cairo and by car to St. Catherine's monastery in the Sinai Desert, to Finland and through Scandinavia, the Soviet Union, Japan, Mexico and many European and Caribbean countries. He was always on a quest to help people from one culture understand those from another, and to broaden his own continuing education. Eugene and Barbara Johnson are newcomers to Kerrville. Therefore, friends and family are planning informal memorial services on Oct. 22, Gene's 88th birthday, in Minnesota, Athens, Ga., the Wash., D.C. area, and Kerrville. Local arrangements are being handled by Wright's Funeral Parlor. Those who desire to do so may make memorial contributions to Christ House, 1717 Columbia Road, NW, Wash., D.C. 20009.
