She was retired from the Elbert County school system after 35 years and was a member of Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, Decatur. She lived with her daughter in Philadelphia, Miss. for six years prior to moving back to Georgia in Dec. 1998. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:36 a.m. on Friday, February 11, 2000 Birdie B. Clower Athens Birdie Moss Bondurant Clower passed away on Wednesday February 9th, 2000, following a brief illness. She was born November 30, 1909, the youngest child of Emmett Jopling Bondurant and Martha Strong (Birdie) Moss Bondurant. She married Emil Jackson (Sandy) Clower on November 30, 1978 as his second wife; Sandy died July 26, 1988 in Asheville, NC. Mrs. Clower attended Childs Street School, graduated Athens High School in 1926, attended Lucy Cobb for one year 1926-27, and graduated with a Liberal Arts degree from Shorter College, Rome, GA in 1930 and received a Master's degree in Education from the University of Georgia in 1931. She worked for the Navy Pre-Flight School on the UGA Campus during World War II, served as an Air Raid Warden for the Clarke County Civilian Defense Council, was Secretary of the Political Science Department, and Counselor to Women Students on the Coordinate Campus (now the Navy Supply Corps School). For her dedicated volunteer service ''Miss Birdie'' received recognition from the American Red Cross (over 1000 hours), Recording for the Blind, as well as for her work as the counselor for Freshman Women at the University of Georgia. She retired in 1974 after 24 years of faithful service. She was a member of the New Day Sunday School Class at Athens First United Methodist Church, and the Ladies' Garden Club, the Alpha Pi Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, and the Chi Omega Sorority.
