OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:01 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, 2000 Jerome Earnest Sports Editor PANAMA CITY, Fla. -- Jerome Earnest, a former sports editor at The News Herald who became a nationally recognized advocate on slow-pitch softball, died Sunday of heart failure at age 58. In recent years, Earnest published, edited and wrote his Supreme Softball, a publication he put out 18 times a year and that some consider as important to slow-pitch softball as Baseball Weekly and Baseball Digest are to baseball. ''He was known far and wide for organizing and (promoting) slow-pitch softball events,'' said Wayne Boyd, a high school teammate and longtime friend. ''The last 20-25 years, he traveled with various high-profile softball teams ... doing promotions and marketing. He probably stayed on the highway three-fourths of the year.'' Earnest began his journalism career while still a Bay High baseball player and was promoted to sports editor at The News Herald, serving in that capacity until 1976. During his journalism career, he managed local softball teams and started the Southeastern Invitational, a prominent tournament still held in Panama City Beach, in 1963. His passion took him to North Carolina, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Georgia, Ohio and California, where he worked for various softball organizations. -- Associated Press Šopyright 2000 Athens Newspapers Inc.
