Mrs. Matthews was born November 3, 1918 to the late Joseph Leonard and Exa Bae McRee of Watkinsville, Georgia. She graduated from the University of Georgia and went to Dallas, Georgia as a high school business teacher. There she met and married Joe L. Matthews, Jr. She retired from the University of Georgia in 1983 where she had been the Executive Secretary to both the Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine and the Dean of the College of Education. In addition, Mrs. Matthews was the founder and president of PanAthenian Greeting Service for 25 years. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jo and John Pine of Baton Rogue, LA and a daughter, Karen Mack of Hilton Head, SC. Other survivors include three grandchildren, Lauren Woolley, Dodd Pine, and Matthew Pine; her sister, Betty Jo Harden of St. Simons Island, GA; and three nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church, where she was a charter member, on Wednesday, December 13 at 2:30 pm with the Rev. Edward Bolen officiating. Burial will follow at the Watkinsville Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and again Wednesday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 am at Bernstein Funeral Home. Born in Madison County, July 24, 1922, Mr. Fortson was a son of the late John Lance and Sallie McConnell Fortson. He was a retired farmer and Mason, and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. A native of Clarke County, she had lived most of her life in Madison County. She was the daughter of Willie Mae Barrett and the late William Coile Barrett, Sr. She worked in the funeral business for 18 years and was employed by Lord and Stephens Funeral Home until her illness. She was a member and past president of the Athens Chapter of The Professional Secretaries International Association. She was a member of Diamond Hill Christian Church (DOC). Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 13, 2000, at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville. Rev. Ray Austin will officiate.
