A native of Valley Falls, S.C., Mr. Lawrence was a son of the late Thomas and Flora Smith Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence had made his home in Athens since 1952 where he was employed with Soil Conservation Service and later served and retired as Comptroller for the Naval Supply Corps School from 1953-1980. Following retirement, he served as Director of the Physical Plant of the Medical Center of Athens and again retired in 1991. Mr. Lawrence was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre of Operations and the Battle of Normandy as Sergeant of Communications. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens and a past deacon. Funeral services will be Thursday, January 13, 2000 at 11 a.m. at Lord and Stephens Chapel, West, with the Rev. Frank Granger officiating. Internment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth R. Lawrence; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas R. and Linda Lawrence of Rome; daughter Martha Ann Lawrence of Athens; sister, Edith Gregg of Texas; brother, Paul Lawrence of Spartanburg, S.C.; two grandchildren, Brian Lawrence of Atlanta and Emily Lawrence of Rome and nieces and nephews. Dillon died January 7, 2000 at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, Georgia. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens on January 14, 2000 at 2:00 P.M. Mrs. Dillon, nee Virginia Parker, the daughter of Elmer Clifford and Amelia Sebastian Parker, was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi, on October 10, 1916. She received both her elementary and high school education in Canton, Mississippi, and was Valedictorian of the class of 1933. She received her B.A. degree from Newcomb College, New Orleans, in 1937 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She later received a library science degree from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. She had a long career in librarianship, including ten years as head of the Texas Medical Center Library in Houston. She retired in 1981 from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where she had served as Chief Librarian of the Health Sciences Library for the previous fifteen years. She was a medical librarian for most of her career and for several years was Associate Editor of the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association. For three years during World War II she was on the staff of the Detroit News. After retirement, she moved to Athens, Georgia. She followed various interests through studies at the University of Georgia. She was active in the League of Women Voters of Athens. She wrote a column on language for the Athens Banner-Herald. On May 20, 1995, she married Merrill B. Dillon, a retired mechanical engineer who had also moved to Athens in retirement. They resided at 146 Valleywood Drive.
