He was in the lumber and manufacturing and wholesale business, and was a member of the Mason's, the Shriner's, Washington Little Theater, the Historical Society and Sigma Chi Fraternity of the University of Georgia. Mrs. Albertson was born in Elbert County, Ga. September 20, 1921, the daughter of the late Howard and Clyde Smith Haralson. She was a former Tax Commissioner of Elbert County and a Mary Kay Cosmetics Salesperson. She was a member of Royston Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Clifton G. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 12:42 a.m. on Sunday, November 12, 2000 Laura Ann Phinizy Segrest Born February 23, 2000 A lifelong resident of Athens, Laura Ann Phinizy Segrest grew up on Milledge Avenue the daughter of Barrett Phinizy and Martha Glover Phinizy. She was a graduate of the Lucy Cobb Institute, Athens High School and the University of Georgia. She graduated with a degree in journalism, Phi Beta Kappa, and was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. In 1938 she married Robert Taylor Segrest, a young assistant professor at the University of Georgia, who grew up in La Grange. They enjoyed an active social life with their many friends, their travels together around the world, and the garden that they delighted in working together until Mr. Segrest's death in 1989. Mrs. Segrest was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the church in which she was baptized as a child. She was deeply committed to the church and served as a member of the vestry and on the Altar Guild. She was a founding member and president of the Athens Junior Assembly (now the Junior League) and a member of Colonial Dames of America. An early proponent of historic preservation, she was an active member of the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, the Athens Historical Society, and Friends of Lucy Cobb. She was a charter member of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and the Atlanta Preservation Center. She loved beauty and human kindness, and her life reflected these values. Her generosity and grace are legendary. As an important figure in the American gardening community, she influenced and encouraged a generation of gardeners. She was a charter member and president of the Junior Ladies Garden Club. She helped supervise the development of the University of Georgia Botanical Garden (now the State Botanical Garden) as a member of its Executive Advisory Committee, and she organized the Friends of the Garden. ''The Laura Tree'' at the Garden was dedicated on her 80th birthday in honor of Mrs. 3and her granddaughter, Laura Barrett. She opened her garden to scholars, students, friends, neighbors and tours, sharing her knowledge of plants, her love of nature and bountiful cuttings. As an active member of the Garden Club of America, she held many offices, including National Director. She traveled extensively in her capacity as a horticulture judge. In 1980, she was presented the Garden Club of America Horticulture Award for making the world ''more beautiful with all her arts and graces.'' In 1998, the Garden Club of America established the Laura Ann Segrest Mentoring Award in honor of her work and spirit. Mrs. Segrest is survived by her three children, Robert Taylor Segrest Jr. and Anne Barrett Segrest of Athens, and Martha Phinizy Segrest of Atlanta; her grandson Robert Taylor Segrest III of Los Angeles and his mother, Eileen Rhea Brown of Atlanta; and her granddaughters, Laura Barrett Segrest and Sarah Elizabeth Cox, and their mother Jennifer Bloomer Segrest. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 13, at 11:00 AM from Emmanuel Episcopal Church with Rev. Mandy Brady officiating. Interment will follow in Oconee Hill Cemetery.
