A native of Greene County, Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late Isom and Pinkie Phillips Jackson and was the widow of Theodore Brown. She was preceded in death by a son, Osby Brown. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 7:18 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2000 Hugh Lee Fowler Athens Photo: obits Hugh Lee Fowler, 75, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000. A native and lifelong resident of Athens, Hugh Fowler was the son of Myrtle Lee Fowler and Frank Edward Fowler. He graduated from Athens High School in 1942, and received an A.B. in Journalism from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. During WWII Fowler served in the 39th Bombardment Group of the 20th Air Force, flying 26 missions over Japan. He was right blister gunner on the ''City of Athens,'' a B-29 Superfortress that his crew members gave him the honor of naming. In 1952, he founded Fowler Products Company, Inc., which became the world's largest remanufacturer of soft drink bottling equipment. He served as its president and CEO until 1973. In the 1970s and 1980s he was engaged in numerous business and real estate ventures in Athens and elsewhere. He was a founding director of Athens Bank and Trust Company, and was responsible for the early restoration of the Franklin House in downtown Athens, which he bought in 1977. Most recently he was a partner in the Market Place of Athens and Columbia, SC. Hugh Fowler was a charter member of the UGA President's Club and the Cornerstone Society of Athens Regional Medical Center, and a member of the Athens City Club. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ann Mullin Fowler; his daughters, Betty Alice Fowler and Frances Ruth Bauerle of Athens, and Mary Ann Bittinger of El Paso, Texas; a son, Lee M. Fowler of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter-in-law, Jackie L. Fowler; a son-in-law, John R. Bauerle; five grandchildren, Andrea Lee Fowler, Hugh Lee Fowler Schlesinger, Jamie Whatley Bittinger, John R.
